Reflection On Ms. Diffey's Class

This week in Ms. Diffey’s class was extremely eventful. I helped and interacted with every student in her class. I had the experience of learning how some of the students think and process information, their likes and dislikes and connecting with them one on one. This journal entry is from October 7th and October 8th.
Right before I arrived to the school on Tuesday, the students had just left music class. They told me how fun and exciting it was but I could tell Ms. Diffey wasn’t too thrilled about it. She told me that it cut into their English time during the day. Due to this situation, Ms. Diffey was glad that I was there to assist her that day. I had the opportunity to make a choice of what lesson I wanted to do with the students. The

I worked with Ms. Diffey’s SPED students. On Tuesday they were busy making up an assignment; they didn’t have the time to do the pre-writing assignment or the grammar lesson. Let me just start by saying, I don’t know how SPED teachers do it because it really tested my patience. I decided to start with the grammar lesson. I read the key concepts from the teacher’s edition and then had the students read the examples. One of the students had questions about everything we went over. It was frustrating to me, but I was pleased she was paying attention to the lesson. After going over the examples and answering the pre-questions together it was time for their worksheet. When we went over the instructions for worksheet it was hard to keep one of the students’ attention. They both struggled while working on the worksheet, and I could see the frustration through their body language. I decided to talk to them to get their mind off of the worksheet for a little while. We talked about their day and what they had for lunch. They both had chicken tacos, and were complaining that there wasn’t enough food. After their spirits were lifted, I decided to put some more effort into helping them with their worksheet. A couple minutes later, we were done with the worksheet. When I explained to them what they were going to do next, the boy almost had a panic attack. He stated how much he hates to write and that he isn’t good at it. I kept …show more content…
This week they wanted to know what high school is like and what kind of classes I am taking. I told them that high school is just like middle school, but bigger and more complicated. When I told them I was taking the CNA course, and explained to them what it was, they were shocked. One boy said, “Whoa! She’s going to be a nurse and a teacher! She’s like Wonder Woman!” I thought his comment was adorable, and it made me feel wonderful. When there are ten minutes left of the school day the students line up in two lines, one for parent pick up and one for the bus. I stand with the students who ride the bus, because it is faster for me to walk that way. We always go through the other 4th grade classroom, and the students ask if Talon is my boyfriend. Talon and I giggle each time because it is the same question every

In Peg Tyre’s article, The Writing Revolution, Tyre analyzes the quality of education in a New York high school and discovers the problem with education in today’s society. New Dorp High School on Staten Island was known for their reputation for poor education, low graduation rate, and high drop out rate. In spring of 2007 four of every ten students starting as a freshmen dropped out from New Dorp (Tyre, 1; 2012). After discussion between the principal and the faculty the staff concluded that the reason for the crisis was that the students were simply bad writers. Starting in 2009, New Dorp put their primary focus into writing, not only in English, but also in all core subjects.…

I am pleased to recommend Shaun-Dae Clark for the Millennial Public Policy Fellowship with New America. I had the pleasure of teaching Shaun-Dae in her Scopes & Methods of Political Science Research class last fall, and I was impressed with her engagement with the course material, skill in articulating difficult concepts and literatures, and ability to grow and learn from the challenges she is presented with. In class, Shaun-Dae stood out early in the course as a perceptive and inquisitive participant in class discussion. She regularly raised thought-provoking questions that pushed the dialogue to a more reflective level, and her written work, both a literature review and an original statistical analysis, confirmed that she was a student with…
