My Experience In America

Learning about cultures can be exciting and strange, all at the same time. It is interesting to see how someone’s lifestyle can differ so greatly from yours, but new experiences can be daunting. As an American born Chinese, almost all of my experiences have stemmed from my Chinese heritage. This project really opened my eyes in terms of other cultures, and what my close friends encounter every day. The first culture I learned about was the Bengali culture. Bangladesh is a country in South Asia, located to the east of India. Many of their customs have been caused by agricultural practices. For example, a nationally recognized holiday, Pohela Boishakh, is Bengali New Year. It is usually celebrated on the 14th of April, and marks the start …show more content…
Our trip was focused on Bengali wedding fashion. There were shops lined up after each other, and I was surprised on how many fashion shops there were on a single street. I had never seen so many vibrantly colored garments at once! There were many different displays of beautiful clothing. One of them was the sari, which is comprised of one piece of fabric elaborately draped over the body. The sari is one of the most popular female garments in Bangladesh, commonly worn for special occasions. On the same street, there were multiple jewelry shops. The windows were filled with complicated gold designs, hoping to entice potential …show more content…
One in particular is “Indian Arrival Day” where the Indian population of Guyana celebrates the first day (May 5th) that Indian labourers arrived. As one can see, these holidays differ in background. The diversity of their holidays can also represent the diversity of their population.
For my event, I attended a show called Visions: An Evening of Songs & Dance at Richmond Hill High School. It highlighted Indo-Caribbean youths, and my partner was a part of the show. There was a large variety of acts, introduced by charismatic emcees, and complete with colorful costumes. Everyone was so talented, with traditional dances, instruments, and vocals—no wonder the entire audience was full.
I learned a lot about Indo-Caribbean music and dance, since I was introduced to so many acts in one night. Before today, I was never exposed to this culture and its songs. I also learned that my partner knows how to play the sitar, a plucked stringed instrument played in Indian music, and can sing beautifully. Being a part of the show was obviously a large commitment, and it shows her passion for her

The event I attended was the Cuentos y Culturas Latinx Heritage Month Showcase hosted by Say Sí. The event ran from September 23rd to the 24th. The performance was only available on the opening days, however the exhibit portion was open to the public for a few weeks after. The performance was an original stage production that portrays one of the creation stories from the Coahuiltecans, who were Native Americans that lived in the southern regions of texas. The name of the production is Napako, meaning “our journey”.…

The Tibet Monks performance at the Six O’Clock show was quite interesting and unique for numerous reasons, and I have learned significantly from it. There were a group of ten Monks who explained their history, language, communications, and dance/performances verbally and through body language, which was phenomenal. What really caught my eyes was that they were different from our culture, and it was fascinating to learn and understand other cultures. Overall, I learned many things from this show. First, my favorite part was when the Monks were standing in the corner playing their instruments with music in the background, and there came a big dragon dancing across the front of the room.…

Over the past several summers, I have galvanized my sense of adventure and my love for traveling. I had the opportunity to travel with the Kenston Field Experience to several national parks in the western United States to study geology up close. I also traveled internationally with the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp to Beijing and Ningbo. This life-changing experience was so particularly rewarding because of the interactions I had with the local Chinese students I met. We taught each other’s languages and cultures to one another, and by time I left China I had gained a new perspective on how culture can shape an individual’s lifestyle.…

Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…

At 14 it is easy to be unaware of whom you truly are and whether or not to be proud of whom you think you are. In the story Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan that is very true. She struggles with embracing her true identity and family in front of people who might not have the same customs as her and her family. Her family is American Asian so they celebrate things differently as the family they invited. In this paper I will be discussing just a few of the different Chinese American customs.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

To describe my participation with Ken for the Capoeira, I had no optimism, but I have learnt several Capoeira moves and its history. Firstly, the main reason that made this class not enjoyable was that I had to present what I’ve learnt. I had no confidence and always had a negative mind. However, I mostly enjoyed learning its history and learn some basic Capoeira moves. When I hear the word “Capoeira”, the first thing that came up to my head was, “Dancing”.…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…

“Like an orange splint open” is a negative language simile Alvi uses which might suggest that even thugh she likes the look of the dress she doesn't actually want to try it on. Alvi also encounters discomfort when she tries to put on the “candy-striped glass bangles” They didn't fit her well, and they “snapped and drew blood” This implies that she has outgrown her culture and also that she doesn't fit in with Pakistan anymore. “Satin silken top” is phrase which uses alliteration which adds more emphasis to the statement. Alvi uses personification when she says “costume clung to me” This statement shows embarrassment and difference.…

After taking a long break and lazing around in the monsoon sun (yes, monsoon doesn't bring rain here in Rajasthan, just exclusive monsoon sunshine), I have a lot to tell and share. Especially about the vacation I recently went on with my family. With our house in making and several other responsibilities, how we convinced my father to agree for this vacation, I have no idea. Thankful to my mother's friend in Sangli, Maharashtra, who's daughter's wedding invitation caused us to go. When my father showed the slightest signs of approval, without further ado, I booked the plane tickets for our journey to Pune from Jaipur for 7th of July and our return tickets by train from Mumbai to Jodhpur on 13th of July.…
