My Experience As A Writer

Success and failure are two things every writer has experienced in their lifetime. While being a student in multiple English courses, I have faced more failures than I have successes. As a young writer, I have been met with difficulties, such as grammar and forming outlines. While these difficulties have discouraged me in my writing before, I have discovered a strength of mine, which is knowing how to structure an essay. Through writing more essays for this course, I hope to no longer deem grammar and formulating outlines as weaknesses, and I strive to find more strengths and become a skilled writer. Grammar is a difficulty I did not overcome in my previous English course. I have always had trouble with grammar. Whenever I took the English section of the ACT practice tests, I would review what I missed, and I would miss plenty of the grammar questions. I would not, and still do not, know when to use the correct verb tense or where to correctly place a comma. Commas are a specific part of grammar I have the most difficulty with. To this day, I find myself placing commas where they are not necessary, creating comma splices. I tend to write how I think, so whenever I pause in my mind, I place a comma where I paused. In my current English …show more content…
Finding out that outlines were required for every one of my papers, has been a low point for me. My previous and current English teachers have always told us to create an outline prior to writing our papers, but had they not told us this, I would not have done it. I preferred to jump into the paper and edit as I progressed through, so I had tend to skip over the outline process. Seeing as my teachers demanded an outline previous to me writing my essay has been a reality check. I have grown to accept this process, and the more I have created outlines, the better I have become at forming an outline prior to beginning my

The completion of three rough drafts and three final drafts, along with the help and constructive criticism of my instructors, are what helped me find my weakness in writing essays. The solution to my weakness is to learn to create complete, specific, and fully developed thesis statements. One can only achieve this through the continual practice of writing essays and executing each skill one at a time. My room for improvement is infinite. I will not stop trying to better myself until I have reached my full potential of writing a near perfect essay with a correctly formulated thesis…

I tend to use vague words such as it and thing; thus, leaving the reader thirsting for more description. I also like to add in words that aren't needed, such as, I believe, personally, I feel, I think etc. Secondly, I find myself using contractions like they are going out of business. Most of the time I do not realize I am using them until I proof read my paper. Lastly, I struggle with writing fluently.…

I learned many new skills, but the most important one involves English and how to write properly. As for the first writing, I really did not understand what was right and what was wrong. Because I never paid close attention to specific rules in how to write. I truly believe it has been hard for me.…

Ever since I can remember I have been drawn to writing. Just ask my parents, when presented with puzzles as a 2 year old (one with letters the other with numbers) I would pick the letters every time. My academic interests have always been slanted toward reading and language arts. Throughout High School I sought out as many english and writing classes I could find which, unfortunately, in my school was not very many.…

I had always assumed that my talents in relation to writing had a relatively mediocre limit, a “glass ceiling” of sorts. All my early literary efforts resulted in collapse and a greater distaste for writing. For me, writing was like trying to catch sand slipping through my fingers: never attainable. I remember a much smaller version of myself sitting down with a freshly sharpened pencil, extra-wide lined paper, and leave engulfed in eraser shavings. The beginning of the story would always start off promising, but no longer than twenty minutes into writing, I would realize that my story had no conceivable ending and needed to be immediately shredded.…

For some people, writing is difficult and it can become stressful to write about topics you have no interest about; for me it’s the contrary, I have always had good fluency when it comes to write about any topic, even if it doesn’t interest me, this is mainly because I take it as a new challenge or an opportunity to have a more in deep look about the certain topic; I use this not only for writing but every time I get tasked with something new, for example back when I was in the marine recruit training more commonly known has boot camp, it’s a requirement to learn how to shoot a rifle with outstanding accuracy, for me this was something completely new since I had never held a rifle before and it hadn’t really caught my attention until…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
