My Errors In My Writing Process

As an educator I have always used simple sentences and abbreviations as I wrote notes for observation records and planning. Once I began studying with Curtin University, this needed to change to a more formal approach. I was disappointed with the errors in my writing that were assessed by my tutor in the first unit of study. As I believed I did a good effort but as I researched these errors I now understand the mistakes. Websites such as Paper Rater will allow me to analyze my problem areas. Proof reading and completing several drafts before final submission will also help me attain better academic writing skills. When writing my short passage for this unit, I thought it was satisfactory after several drafts. I then used the website ‘Paper Rater’ to analyze my writing and found errors that I did not even consider. Some of these errors included the use of transitional phrases and words that allow my sentences to flow more smoothly. However, I was able to receive 9% equal or better than students in my education level (www.paperrater.com). In addition to transitional words, it was also found that I should improve on the variety of my sentence beginnings. I also need to focus on writing in an active rather than the passive voice. As it is stated in Grellier and Goerke (2014, p. 165) “many teachers of writing recommend that you avoid the passive voice as much as possible”. Prior to this reflection, I did not know the difference between the two …show more content…
I am now analyzing my sentence structures and grammar as I write. Continuously practicing my writing and gaining feedback from the discussion board, as well as through smart thinking. By listening to this feedback will help me improve to become a more proficient writer, as I am continuously learning new skills. I will continue to use the online tools that assess my writing to gain more experience. Furthermore, I will ask for help when necessary from my tutors and other students among email or collaborate sessions. During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

In order to become a stronger writer one must recognize his errors. In my previous essays I have not done a good job of expressing my subtopics. I have made the mistake of hiding my subtopics, making them unclear. In order to fix this problem I could create a web or some sort of visual that will allow me to organize my thoughts. Having a specific sentence in the beginning of each paragraph will also orientate the reader on what to look for in that specific paragraph.…

Over the Semester my writing has improved immensely in comparison to my previous years of literature. Before ninth grade, I would use an abounding amount of simple words like “very” or “because”. In ninth grade on the other hand I have started to and continue to use words and phrases like “exceedingly” and “due to the fact.” This presents improvement in my writing because using words like exceedingly is evidence that the writer is a higher level writer due to the fact that it is a complex word. Another example of advancement in my writing is the amount of transitions I put in my writing.…

Crazy is the word I choose to best describe my life currently. Being in college is hard, then again, going back to college in your thirties with the spans of a decade between classes is potentially exhausting, if not grueling. My story is a classic, hardly unique, that many others could write it as well. After graduating high school, I started taking general education courses at my local community college to get them out of the way before enrolling into more degree specific courses.…

My essays are filled with multiple grammatical errors but my primary patterns of error are weak transitions and sentence fragments. I have weak transitions in my essays because I do not use a word or phrase that shows how the meaning of one sentence is related to the meaning of the preceding sentence. In order to fix my issue, I need to have transition markers that indicate contrast or using a word that connects the previous sentence to the next one. Using words such as ("for example, for instance") would help the direction of my argument be more apparent to the reader. My second major pattern of error is sentence fragments because I have incomplete sentences or ones that cannot stand alone in my papers.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
