As a teacher, it is important to take equity and social justice into practice. For example, teachers should learn about students’ backgrounds and be open-minded about it. According to Equity pedagogy: An Essential Component of Multicultural Education, Banks C and Banks J (1995). said “Teachers who are skilled in equity pedagogy are able to use diversity to enrich instruction instead of fearing or ignoring it” (p. 157). This indicates that a skilled teacher would use equity pedagogy in their teaching and it would help if the teacher learn about their students backgrounds, ethnicity, and race. Teachers have to be understanding and be open minded about student’s issues. For example, if a student does not speak English, the teacher has to give extra help for the students to learn. I have experienced this because I did not speak English when I came to the United States. My teacher was understanding and give me extra help in order for me to learn. She found a Vietnamese classmate to help me translate. This teacher used equity in her classroom because she gave me extra help because I did not speak English at all compared to my classmates. I believe teachers have to be strict in order to make their students listen. If the teacher is lenient, their students will take advantage of them and disobey them. I want to be strict but friendly; so, my students would not be afraid to ask questions or talk to me. I also believe that teachers have to be organized in order to teach effectively. According to “Introduction to Teaching” by Hall, Quinn, and Gollnick (2016). These authors talk about the different types of teaching strategies and how to be a successful teacher. Organization is one of the teaching strategies that can help teachers with their lesson plan. The text states that “Organization is to introduce the topic, to expand on it, and to summarize what has been talked about” (p. 410). Howard said “We cannot fully understand dominance without exploring the concept of knowledge construction.” (53). This is true because exploring about other ethnicity, background, and race, it gives us a better view of what make other unique and different from us. It gives us a better understanding of other people’s background, race, and ethnicity to avoid racism and unfairness between white and colors skin. Without knowledge and study, people would not get along if they don’t understand each other. This is extremely helpful for my teaching career because I want to treat my class with equity and social justice.
