July 28, 2016 an incredible miracle was welcomed into this world. Isaiah Thomas McClain, weighed 6 pounds and 14 ounces, a handsome little boy that is so special and loved very much. About seven months ago, my lovely sister Ashely has been in a tremendous amount of doctor appointments to receive help. Every one of the doctors had told her to abort him; they told her that aborting him would be the best choice, due to they believed he has an extra chromosome 13, which is called Trisomy 13; the life span is two minutes after birth up to two years. Isaiah's organs would be in the wrong place, he would have major heart problems, his brain would not have any protection, he will not have a left eye, and he will have a cleft lip.…
Many of us have encountered someone with a disability or are not fully able-bodied ourselves. One of my high school friends has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound. Even though it is regulated that schools must be handicap accessible, I saw the struggles my friend went through because our society is structure based on the perfectly able-bodied. Due to his condition, my friend was not allowed to take tests at the same time as the rest of the students. He was excluded, and this further ostracized him based on his condition.…
For caregivers of someone with a disability, dealing with everyday tasks related to the disability can be a challenging feat. For some families, a solution to this problem was aided by a controversial medical intervention that stunted the growth of the disabled individual at a young age. This stunting of growth has caused debate amongst individuals on whether or not it is ethical to do so to the child. For the Preslar’s, however, medically stunting their son’s growth was the answer to their future caregiver woes. As a result of a complication during pregnancy, Ricky Preslar was diagnosed at a young age with a form of cerebral palsy called spastic quadriplegia with static encephalopathy (Field, 2016).…
Reproductive Genetics, Wrongful Life, and Wrongful Birth: A Summary Analysis of “Bill S-201: An Act to Prohibit and Prevent Genetic Discrimination” by Jennifer Ann Rinaldi Summary: Rinaldi’s (2009) article provides legal evidence of various cases involved in litigation related to ‘wringful death” and wrongful birth” issues in genetics reproductive rights. This article provides evidence of the negative biases of disability cases that can be harmful by devaluating the life of the disabled individual. A focus on various legal cases, such as R.H. v. Hunter, [1996] and Arndt v. Smith, [1997], that the burden of wrongful life and wringful death inordinately shift the shame of ‘existing” onto the disabled person in the Canadian court of law. A…

In “Trying to Embrace a ‘Cure’: [Op-Ed]”, author Sheila Black persuades her audience to consider the effects of technology that could cure disabilities by effectively using various appealsin response to a rhetorical situation. Living in South Florida, I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn from a wide array of cultures and people. It wasn’t until my preteen years that I met a person who would ultimately leave a mark on me for the rest of my life. Brody, my little cousin who is now eight years old, stands out from the other boys his age. When he was born, he was completely unable to open his eyes. Shortly after his birth, the doctors found a small hole in his heart.…
Emily Oster said this “Prenatal testing is a complicated decision for many women, forcing us to confront concerns about a disabled child and risks of miscarriage.” What this tells us is any pregnant woman is susceptible to having a disabled child. In my paper. I will outline how prenatal screening is defined, the positive verses the negative outcomes, and the role of prenatal counselors. Prenatal testing is simply a set of medical tests performed on expectant mothers to determine if an unborn child is likely to have specific birth defects.…
Reading Response In the article ‘’On Being A Cripple’’, by Nancy Mair’s is about Nancy who struggles with MS, she implies on how her life changed with her diagnoses, and how she learned to cope with her disease. My response to this article was a interesting. I noticed that she hated living with MS at first, because she wasn’t born with it, then she realized that this who she is, she accepted it.…
Whether or not abortion should be legal is a question that has been heavily debated for decades. It is, without a doubt, one of the more hot-button issues that is discussed. One side argues that the other is full of heartless baby killers. One side argues that the other is full of delusional oppressors. The answer to this hefty question can be found through logic and empathy.…
In this scenario, the debate was about the prenatal testing, particularly, about a blood test that identifies the risk of Down syndrome. Of the four responses that were offered in the scenario, I agree with the response ‘A’ and oppose the other responses. Because I do believe that if a simple, non-invasive procedure like a blood test provides the crucial information about the unborn baby, then there is nothing wrong to do this procedure. “Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) allows a highly sensitive detection of Down syndrome early in a pregnancy with no risk of miscarriage, therefore potentially increasing the number of pregnancies identified with Down syndrome” (Kellogg et al., 2014). As Dr. Williams mentioned, it is very important to provide…
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve,” Napoleon Hill once said, claiming the power of mindset. According to The Free Dictionary, mindset refers to a fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations. In simpler words, the mindset is the way of thinking that orients our reactions and tendencies. Dr. Alia Crum’s TED Talk on “Change Your Mindset, Change the Game” was impressive and inspiring, illustrating how mindset plays an essential role in human life such as our body mechanism, belief, and performance. She first addressed the stereotypical judgements of the people and then shattered them with assumption-less, solid evidences from four different examples…

There are many well-known individuals who have not let having a disability slow them down from achieving a good quality of life. For example, Chris Burke is a man with Down syndrome who has gone on to become an actor, author, speaker, and musician. Chris has won a Golden Globe award, which is not an award that is handed out to those who are incompetent or unqualified. People with Down syndrome often have deficits in their speech and language production or experience deficits in short term auditory memory. However, as seen by Chris’ success, these are delays that don’t affect someone’s capability of going out and making a name for themselves.…
