I believe our society lives in a world of disconnectivity. Whether it is a phone, laptop or hours behind a video game controller, kids are in constant need of technology and are seemingly unable to function without it. During the summer months, I believe I serve a role in the movement to get kids to unplug.

For the past four summers, I have worked on a 535-acre, manmade lake in the heart of beautiful Chester County, Pennsylvania. Besides its beauty, the lake is also known for its many recreational activities for all ages, including: kayaking, sailing, fishing, canoeing and even full-moon night tours when nature cooperates.

As a head counselor, my job is to make sure the kids have fun and stay safe around the water. However, one of my favorite parts of the job is to watch kids lock their devices in the lockers for the day. It is obvious that this pulls some kids out of their comfort zone, but before long we have the campers reconnecting with each other and nature.

With a full day of unstructured play, I witnessed campers try new things such as jumping into the lake using a rope swing or taking control of a sailboat. It didn’t take long for their self-esteem to kick in, which made me feel confident in my abilities as role model and

Like jumping off our water cabin into the lake to shower or having a tetherball tournament before chow. When I’m with my school friends, the first thing any of us turn to when we are bored is our cellphones. The next speakers were two girl counselors who were sisters. They talked about how going to Camp Longhorn along with their younger sister, who was still a camper at the time, has impacted their family. I felt that their story was so relatable to my family camp experience.…

Being a camp counselor last summer allowed me develop a companionship with my campers by leading activities, inspiring positive choices, acting as a role model, and building community amongst adolescents. These happenings were transformative for both the children and counselors. Along with this, I participate in mentoring programs for childhood cancer victims. Being a survivor, I’m often more capable of empathizing with the situation, than someone who has never experienced a similar illness.…

Everyday of the school year I peer back into my summer memories of camp and reflect on how camp has changed me. I am an introvert, and I completely embrace that, but also forcing myself outside of my comfort zone is equally important. While camp has taught me social skills, how to, “make new friends, but keep the old,” most importantly, it has…

In the summer before seventh grade, still näive and unaware of the world around me, I arrived at a small, humble, yet well-known summer camp on the outskirts of San Antonio, with no clue that I would leave as a completely different individual with a completely different mindset. I would leave as someone who believed that things happened for a reason and that you are never alone, no matter how lonely you felt. In the six days that I spent at TBarM sports camp, I grew up and learned more about myself than I could’ve ever envisioned. One of my counselors, Caroline, a lively, warmhearted, and caring college freshman with a burning passion for God and helping others, and I were relaxing in the cabin by each other’s side on a sunny mid-July day on the second or third day of camp, attempting to memorize bible verses that we found especially beautiful and…

I saw a few kids joking and messing around, but for the most part, everyone was silent. I sat down in in seat and acknowledged the two girls on my left and right. The instructor of the camp began his lecture and he asked us to talk with the people around us and get to know them. This surprised me, as I hadn’t been to an athletic camp which emphasised talking like this. The more I began to talk with the two girls beside me, I realized that they were all in the same situation as me.…

Supervisor Even though I haven’t had the chance to work with my Site Supervisor, Dr. Jayne M. Leh, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with her from time to time and sort of getting the feel of the kind of person she is. From her academic accomplishments to her tremendous work experience outside the field, she has led a rewarding life. I’d hope as one of her interns at Camp Noah, I could undertake any task that is given to me with success and lead by example. Camp Noah is a week-long facility where I would have to “dorm” with other interns or people volunteering. There will be times I might be tired and not willing to get up at eight in the morning, but I have to find the strength in me and just do it.…

It happened when I was taking a photo of the purple sky and two stretching lakes across the Bonney Pass in the Teton Mountains. I suddenly knew that this wonderful place had transformed me into a better person and a more confident woman. It took some courage to get to that place. My stomach had that sinking feeling that I would be leaving my comfortable, close-knit home to work at a ranch camp 2,610 miles away.…
