Reflective Essay: A Career In The Medical Field

Growing up, my father, choosing drugs over his daughter, left me with a feeling of neglect. I felt the constant urge to demonstrate to him that I was worth his time and attention. Instead, when it came time for the important events in my life there were always excuses as to why he could not make it. This experience would be the beginning of the passageway that led me to the dedicated, hard-working and over achieving person that I am today. Unfortunately, my education became negatively influenced throughout my hardships. However, through perseverance and a modification of my outlook I found that I was capable of a great deal more that I had previously thought. Here I worked in both outpatient and inpatient pharmacy compounding, mixing and dispensing medications. I was offered a position in inpatient pharmacy shortly after my externship. I have requested to be trained in several areas of the pharmacy in order to be as versatile in pharmacy as possible. I can now work in the chemotherapy, narcotic, unit dose, intravenous, and pediatric areas of the hospital. I will continue to expand my knowledge and experience in order to be the best pharmacy technician and future pharmacist I can be. Throughout this experience I have learned that I can take on an immense amount of work while keeping a positive attitude. My goal is to become a pharmacist and be able to support the community. Being trained to volunteer for hospice patients has further influenced my desire to help and make a difference. I feel my experiences have shaped me into a well-rounded individual.
