At RefugeeOne, The kids were given worksheets and they would go to workshops to learn English. The structure of how they learn was out of my hands but it is probably the most efficient since it has been ongoing for years. I encourage my students to participate in the classroom and told him not to be shy because I was also once and EL L student. I found out that giving positive feedback will encourage them and give them more confidence which helps them communicate a lot better. We also taught them social courtesies like manners and politeness, because different cultures sometimes tend to have different courtesies. Taught them how to express their emotions and thoughts, what is appropriate to talk about and what is not. Moving to a new place results in culture shock so these rules had to be taught. We also watched some TV shows, like “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Phineas and Ferb". My students wanted to be American as they can, using Hollywood films also to learn English and explore American customs. Another thing that was mandatory for them to learn was about transportation and how to follow directions. It is so important that there is another group of volunteers to help them learn about transportation and how to get from places to places. Things like how to take the CTA and how to go grocery
