It is clear that the crises molded the females to go in inverse paths in life. The major crisis that defined Elena’s and Lila’s path in life occurred the day of Lila’s wedding to Stefano. During the event Elena faces the crisis that she could be trapped in a constant cycle of illiteracy that plagued the town. It’s this fear of entrapment that throws her into the crisis of choosing between staying in the place where everything was routine and stagnant or follow Nino into the light of a new, unexplored horizons. Lila faced the same crisis the only difference occurred with the outcome. Lila ends up deciding to stay in the town believing that marrying Stefano will bring about a positive change into her life. Unlike Elena who manages to escape the cycle by following Nino to the light, Lila finds herself once more trapped when she realizes that Marcello, a previous suitor, wore the shoes she made with her blood and tears that her husband had previously bought.
