A large part of human life is facing challenges and doing things that you feel with great conviction you cannot do. One of the most intimidating tasks I have ever faced was performing Retreating Dragon during my black tip test in Karate. From the sheer intricacy of the form, my absence of confidence as well as the actual test all play a role in the course of events. To begin with is the fact that Retreating Dragon is the most complex and challenging forms I have ever dealt with to date. One contributing factor to this is the amount of movement this form includes. To begin with, I wasn’t confident that I could perform Retreating Dragon. This is because the form intimidated me, when I was a purple belt in Karate I studied Iron Horse which is the “little brother” of Retreating dragon and personally when demonstrating this move I had an immensely troubling time with it. Because of this performing Retreating Dragon which is the “big brother” to Iron Horse caused me to be undeniably lacking in my confidence. Another variant to my lack of confidence was that I didn’t have a lot of time learning the move. To take a black tip test on a form an individual is required to have a minimum of six classes and I had the minimum limit. A final detail was how exhausted I was during this timeframe. I hadn’t went to sleep until around ten o’clock the previous night and after a full school day, not to mention the pre class workout caused my batteries to be on the low side.
