Gus takes clear pride in claiming to be able to refer any word to its Greek origin and while it’s very much humorous in the film considering he makes half of it up there is an element of truth to that. The Greek language has lent us the brickwork for more than a few word prefixes over the years including but not limited to Biology, which takes its root from “Bio” which means “life” in Greek and Metaphor which takes its root from “Meta” meaning after. During my junior year at Bayonne High School I started dating a Greek girl from my Biology class. Before I had gone to meet her parents she felt the need to warn me about her father and his attachment to Greek customs even going as far to say he probably wouldn’t like me due to my non-Greek heritage. I brushed it off as paranoia on her part because who would really be so into their culture that they would immediately dismiss someone they didn’t know out of hand? I couldn’t have been more wrong. Her father was an absolute nightmare with very bold, direct, and rude comments being spit out continuously while saying a “Greek boy” would understand his humor. Interestingly enough his wife who was every bit as Greek as him seem embarrassed by her husband’s badgering of me apologizing to me at the end of the night in private and inviting me over again while her husband wasn’t around. This mirrors the behavior portrayed in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and leads me to believe that it must be relatively accurate behavior amongst
