In Islam, worship is a big part of everyday life and is not specific to just ritual based practices. There are five formal parts of worship called the Five Pillars of Islam and they are the declaration of faith, prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage. One must say the declaration of faith in order to become a Muslim. The daily prayer is important to note because Muslim’s must pray five times a day to connect with God. Charity is a big part of Islam because wealth is seen as a blessing from Allah so it is the duty of the rich to take care of the poor. Fasting is something that Islam has in common with Judaism and Christianity in order to practice self-control and to be thankful for what they have. The pilgrimage is a once and a lifetime journey to Mecca that every Muslim hopes to take once before they die. All five pillars present ideas that are definite not foreign to the United States, in fact Christianity incorporates several concepts from the pillars in its own religion. The United States is supposed to be this melting pot of culture, race, and religion. But the way Muslims are viewed contradicts that very notion.
