In my experience in music, I have noticed an over-obsession over the seating position of an ensemble, especially for first chair. Many of my fellow musicians view the system as a hierarchy, following the false notion that your chair determines playing ability and leadership capabilities; however, I believe that every player is an essential building block to form a foundational orchestra. I had a enjoyable experience throughout secondary school as the co-principal player in the band and orchestra. Without the pressure and expectations of being top dog, I was able to appreciate the beauty of the music while playing an important part near the center of the orchestra. Some of these roles include being the middleman of communication between sections and acting as the whip to keep the section focused, but I had a considerably more noteworthy
