Within this lab we studied and compared the quantity of effort throughout intermittent and continuous exercise on a cycle ergometer. The time to fatigue, and recovery time was also considered during each type of exercise. To look at muscular fatigue in this lab we used a sub maximal test, this was used because maximal tests can be harmful to participants. Muscular endurance can be described as the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to do continual muscular contractions with resistance, when the muscle can no longer work at a given rate that is fatigue. Muscles that fatigue quickly have low endurance, muscles that take time to fatigue can be categorised as muscles with high endurance. Muscular endurance is key to may sports, sports where intermittent exercise is performed, such as rugby or basketball, intermittent training is appropriate. Sports where a continuous exercise output is required, such as a marathon, continuous training is appropriate. Exercise has beneficial effects in patients with cardiovascular disease, even for those with severely impaired cardiac function, and that physical inactivity accelerates the severity of heart failure. The purpose of this experiment is to compare and contrast Continuous and intermittent exercise, it is hypothesized that the participants will be able to work longer and have a greater power output well performing intermittent exercise. Since intermittent exercise allows for recovery the participants should not fatigue as fast, as when they are doing continuous exercise. We hypothesized that intermittent exercise bouts are more effective than moderate continuous training, during intermittent exercise participants will exercise longer and have a greater work output.
