Whilst cardiovascular training has weight loss and heart and lung health benefits, there is more to fitness than this. Muscle power, i.e. strength and building muscle, is essential for weight control since it is the best calorie-burning tissue the body has so the more muscle in the body the better it will be at burning calories around the clock. If someone were to only do cardio, where you only burn fat while you are exercising, once they stop or take a break they are likely to gain back fat lost unless they have muscle built as well, which cannot be done just with moderate cardiovascular exercise. There are two types of muscle fibres, fast-twitch and slow-twitch. When a muscle is exercised aerobically it is primarily the muscle’s slow-twitch fibres that are activated – these are the ones utilised …show more content…
Solely doing this kind of exercise can also lead to the unused fast-twitch fibres fading and sometimes even dying off.
Loss of muscle due to age can also be due to fading of the fast-twitch fibres, so it is pertinent for anyone 30 or over – from which age you can begin to lose muscle mass – to engage in a regular strength training routine in order to moderately build the fast-twitch fibres (though 5 to 10
