Murlock wasn't always as lifeless looking. He was once young and, like all young men, full of hope and vigor. He had built his wooden dwelling by himself and owned a gun for hunting. He had also married a young woman. She also shared the same qualities as Murlock. They both were happy together.
Although it isn't very clear as to what exactly happened to Murlock, the death of his wife seemed to have affected him. He hasn't been able to recover from the trauma of his wife's death and the horrifying incident that entailed.

The whole incident could have even been a dream. However, this experience will change Murlock's life forever since he is horrified by what he encounters with. Myths suggest that a black panther in a dream is a symbol of a major that might occur in life(to how far this is relevant in the story is questionable). There are repetitive expressions regarding the pitch blackness of the room which creates the type of setting perfect to provoke fear, terror and distress.
