The determination of children’s health outcomes and their precursors such as healthy eating, is a difficult process in which individuals must consider various academic resources to develop an appropriate perspective. However, it is in determining the value of these resources, regarding their impact on our understanding of early childhood health, where the problem lies. This review will critically assess the articles; ‘Food consumption patterns in preschool children,’ (Pabayo, Spence, Casey & Storey, 2012) and ‘Advertising and fictional media effects on healthy eating choices in early and later childhood,’ (Ferguson, Contreras & Kilburn, 2014) as well as the report, ‘Munch & Move: Evidence and Evaluation Summary,’ (Lockeridge, Innes-Hughes, …show more content…
This report was created in response to rising concerns of childhood obesity and its relation to the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, as well as to demonstrate the Munch & Move initiative’s contributions towards addressing these concerns (Lockeridge et al., 2015, Executive Summary, p. 4, para. 1). The report encompasses various benefits of the initiative’s implementation in early childhood settings including increases (from 2012 – 2015) in the prevalence of healthy eating learning experiences (64.3% - 86.5%), the daily provision of water or other appropriate drinks (50.5% - 76.0%), and the annual provision of health information to student’s families (33.3% - 71.0%) (Lockeridge et al., 2012, Table 4, p. 17). From this, it can be determined that the Munch & Move initiative is successful in improving the rate of successful accomplishment of various positive health practices, including those concerning healthy eating (Lockeridge et al., …show more content…
The article suggests, there is a link between socioeconomic status and the intake of ‘choose least often’ foods as a result of the affordability and convenience of acquiring said foods (Pabayo et al., 2012, Socioeconomic Status, p. 70). Similarly, it portrays the impact of daycare and kindergarten settings on the intake of appropriate foods, as these settings allow for education, not only of children, but of parents, allowing them to make more health-conscious dietary decisions for their child (Pabayo et al., 2012, Daycare or Kindergarten Attendance, p. 70). These secondary acknowledgements provide a greater impact on a reader’s understanding, granting the article more value as an academic resource. Pabayo et al.’s study, however, is not without limitations which impede on its usefulness. The two main limitations of the study are that it makes conclusions based on self-reported surveying, as well as that it is heavily dominated by the high SES demographic. The issues of self-reported surveying lie within the opportunity to miscue information in conjunction with the implications which particular answers may convey (Pabayo et al., 2012, Study Limitations and Strengths, p. 70).
