I think I am a good multi-tasker in some cases. I can text and walk or listen to music while exercising. I can eat while scrolling through social media on my phone and I can sing while taking a shower. Most people can perform low-level attention tasks easily. After reading the pages without any music and only my focused attention, I was able to recall most of the key words and concepts without looking back in the textbook. Whenever I turned on a song by my favorite band, I was able to recall some of the information but less information than I wrote down previously. For my mind to be able to understand and store information, my focused awareness has to be only be on reading the textbook. Focused awareness is defined as “a state of heightened alertness in which one is fully absorbed in the task at hand.” (Nevid, 2015, p. 136) Without any distractions of background music, I was able to be fully absorbed in the task of reading my textbook, which is why I could remember more information on the page. When the music was playing, my mind was in a state of divided consciousness. Divided consciousness is “the state of awareness characterized by divided attention to two or more tasks or activities performed at the same time.” (Nevid, 2015, p. 138) Since my attention was divided between reading and listening to music, I was unable to hold the same amount of information as I did
