In recent years, there has been a great concern that the minority who experience poverty, inequality and racism is in connection to poor health outcomes. The social determinants of health such as the environment, health behavior, and socio-economic status. In this paper, my concern is how disparities of resources such as availability of food stores, and restaurants among minority cause diabetes in East Harlem as compared to the Upper Eastside where the majority of white resides.
Literature Review
Disparities in Premature Mortality Between High- and Low-Income US Counties written by Erika R. Cheng et al. talked about the determinants of health and its association with premature mortality. The paper uses data from “the 2010 County, …show more content…
Their similarities talk about the multiple social determinants of health, how it decreases or increases control over one’s life regarding access to safe neighborhoods, health care, healthy foods, education, and clean air. It also, deals with how environmental disparity exist between high and low-income groups, racial/ethnic and health care and the risk factors associated with it. Therefore, the need for community leaders, physicians, and public health workers to understand the support and barriers in the environment in which they find themselves and the people they serve while addressing environmental influence on community health. Regarding differences, Erika R talks about disparities between high and low-income US Counties and how it leads to diseases and premature death. Carol R. Horowitz talks about limited availability and cost of diabetes-healthy foods for the minority group, and Maida P Galvez speaks of the lack of large stores with healthy food that leads to the cause of diabetics among the people of East Harlem.
Research Question: Can limited resources in your environment leads to developing people with diabetes? This study will give us a broad idea about disparities in environmental resources between the minority (people of color) and the majority (non-Hispanic whites) in Harlem and the need to improve upon such disparities by establishing more large food stores and restaurants that sell healthy …show more content…
Those variations such as low-income, limited resources, etc. lead to an unhealthy living, unhealthy life choice, and health issues. That is a challenge and the need for community leaders, physicians, and public health workers to understand the support and barriers in the environment in which they find themselves and the people they serve while addressing environmental influence on community health. The need to look beyond the individual in dealing with environmental influences on community health and understanding of the socioeconomic context within which modifiable variables exist. Improvement in multiple determinants of health perspective, with emphasis on health behaviors, socioeconomic status, health care, and the physical environment will brighten areas where resources can target toward plans that will extend years of life. Also, policies aimed at modifying factors associated with poor health outcomes may need to include consideration of the larger socioeconomic context within which these variables
