Multiple Nursing Theory

One nursing theory on its own cannot provide the nursing world with adequate understanding or substantial direction. When a nurse purposefully recognizes and applies multiple theories in personal practice, quality of care improves, and the nurse is better prepared to organize information, plan implementations, execute ideas safely, offer suggestions to other members of the healthcare team, and effectively evaluate the plan of care (Alligood, 2014). The study of various nursing theories should cause a nurse to reflect more deeply on personal values, what knowledge and skills are deficient, and what knowledge the nurse should spend time pursuing. Alligood (2014) states, “Knowledge is not static. Rather, it continues to grow in relation to the profession’s goals for the human and social welfare of the society that nurses serve” (p. 8). The history of nursing theory is proof of the constantly changing framework that drives nursing education and practice. In the 60’s and 70’s, theorists focused on general topics and global ideas, but by the 80’s, scholars recognized the need for various, unique approaches to theory studies (Master, 2012). According to Jones and Phillips (2015), “Nursing continues to be rated the most trusted profession, according to the annual Gallup poll ranking of honesty and ethics in various fields” (para 2). Such trust demands a continued interest in improved nursing care.
