A seven- year- old boy fighting a war he didn’t sign up for is admitted into the hospital. He is pushed into a room that is larger than life and begins to worry, but then walks in his nurse. She knows his story, his battle and how to nullify his fears. As the doctors begin to discuss white blood cells and chemotherapy to his father, his nurse deciphers their medical language while reassuring him that he is strong enough to handle this fight. As the day progresses, the nurse comes in sporting a smile, takes his vitals and comforts him while administering his medication. Having a like group of people was an important factor in my choice of Michigan State, some whom I have never met before, supporting me and respecting my experiences and choices as a young adult. This also has played a role into why I chose MSU’s nursing program. Studying nursing at MSU holds a high regard and level of responsibility. While the world can seem scary and searching for a career even scarier, I believe that my Spartan community will provide me with comfort during this unfamiliar experience. As a student, I need to be challenged to be successful and Michigan State has the reputation of challenging their students to excel. I recognize that the nursing program is a difficult program but it’s the type of challenge that I flourish in. I believe this has helped me become a more personable person who is easy to talk to. I spend the entire day being excited for the new ideas and stories that young people tell me. Patients need to feel as though they can talk to their nurses and express concerns that matter. While volunteering in the ER I was able to put my communication skills to test in a level 1 trauma center. I communicated with the nurses and doctors on staff to ensure any comfort measures I gave a patient wouldn’t interfere with their care, while communicating to the patients to decipher their needs and to relax them while they are enduring a crisis. Also a main reason why I have chosen to minor in Spanish to be able to communicate with a wider variety of patients since communication has proven to be a big part of a hospital functions. Finally, I have spent a lot of time in the hospital setting and have found a passion and a place to thrive. Nursing for me will be much more than a job, it will be a passion that will allow me to look forward to each day and every patient encounter while also allow me to fulfill my dream of furthering my education to receive my MSN and become a nurse practitioner. Michigan State is the perfect for me to start that
