Case Study Two: Ms. A Ms. A is a 26 years old female that has been experiencing a increase of inability to breathe otherwise known as short of breath, having low levels of energy and decreased enthusiasm to play gulf in the middle of season. While playing golf in a high mountainous area Ms. A became light headed and had to cut the game short and so they took her to be evaluated in the emergency clinic. When her labs resulted they showed: hemoglobin 8g/dl, hematocrit 32% (which are boarder line critically low), erythrocyte count = 3.1 x 10/mm, red blood cell smear showed microcytic and hypochromic cells (small red blood cell), and Reticulocyte count = 1.5% (low end of normal). A's labs and her signs and symptoms her diagnosis is ultimately called iron deficient anemia however her this type of iron deficient anemia is specifically called microcytic anemia. The microocytic and hypochromic cells are small red blood cells that do not carry enough oxygen to the body. Iron deficient anemia is the most common type of anemia in women do to the loss of blood from their monthly menstrual cycle . According to Mayo Clinic, "without enough iron, your body can't produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (hemoglobin)." Thus making you short of breath and tired as a result of low oxygen levels circulating her body. Mayo Clinic also says irregular heart rates can occur such as tachycardia, a fast regular heart rate, because the heart must pump more blood to move the oxygen through the entire body. Her heart rate is fast but her blood pressure is low due to the low volume of blood circulating in her body. Normal levels of hemoglobin on average for women should be between 12 and 15 grams.
