This story is cleverly put into a flash back for the majority of the film. Starting at George’s childhood and then going to his present adult self, who is considering suicide. The story takes place in Bedford Falls and the plot begins to unfold when George’s father dies and he is left reluctantly with his father’s failing business. Mr. Potter, the main antagonist in the story, shuts down the banks and the people of the town begin to worry. Even though they want to go to Potter for help, George persuades them to not go to him. Potter plays a crucial role in this film. (7) Underrated and not one of the most celebrated villains, he is still a highly ingenious antagonist, as this paper will point out. When the banks close, Mr. Potter tries the persuade the people to come to him for money, offering them ½ of their profit. But little did they know that his real motive was to get them all under his thumb. George puts it well when he says, “Mr. Potter doesn’t want to help. Potter just wants your money.” He also tries to allure George into working for him when he says, “Good job, plenty of pay, and success.” Luckily for Bedford Falls, George doesn’t fall for his tricks.
