This is a formal request for an alternative assignment for my Micah
Pierson. I have a significant moral objection to an assignment – specifically reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at CSI in Spanish. Below is the email I sent his teacher explaining my objection.
Mr. Moon, is unwilling to accommodate my request and indicated that I was welcome to appeal to the school board.
Mr. Moon provided the explanation that if an exception was made in this case, he would have to grant exceptions in other cases. The example he provided was a child who wanted to make up an late assignment – the parents thought that was a moral issue. I have also studied eastern art and have studied western civ extensively. I have worked with people from all over the world and enjoyed their cultures immensely.
Again, I believe Xavier to be a true classical school, but I am beginning to learn that in some ways, 'classical' is only skin deep. I offer the following comments for your consideration.

In the United State of America, we have adopted instruments of loyalty and unity that define our core beliefs in word and in practice.
To the patriot, the citizen, those who identify deeply with the heritage of the United States know that the recitation of these patriotic cornerstones are far more that symbolic gestures.
Core ideological expressions such as the Pledge of Allegiance and the
National Anthem were and continue to be tools that lift up and bind individuals with widely differing backgrounds mentally and spiritually.
They help us internalize the notion of patriotism.
While the United States does not have a national language, it is understood that spoken English is a key unifying element. Immigrants fleeing political, religious, and economic strife for hundreds of years have understood the blessing of not only learning English but internalizing the ideals that found this
