1. Information (sub-point): This generation of youth is extremely dependent upon their parents. As a result, moving away from home for university can be enormously beneficial for teens as it “can facilitate a fast transition to independence and provide students with opportunities to explore new areas and to establish new networks for future job opportunities” (Niu, 2015, P.326). This transition allows youth to quickly become independent and learn how to live without the support system of their family. A downside to this quick transition is that very often after the first two or three weeks students report experiencing homesickness, which is associated with loneliness (Turley, 2006). Information (sub-point): A problem with moving away from home for students is that they will also be moving away from their life long friends and will have to make new ones. This can be a very stressful experience for students. However, students who live on campus are actually reported to make more friends and be more satisfied in their social relationships than the students who live off campus (Lau, E. , Wong, M. , Ng, E. , Hui, C. , Cheung, S. , et al. 2013). Living with strangers such as roommates or other residents in the dorm helps the student learn strategies to deal with unfamiliar situations and makes them better at dealing with all types of people (Tétreault, 2015).
