In the documentary “No Impact Man”, by Colin Beavan, displayed how Colin and his family tried to reduce pollution and lessen the environmental damage to the planet for a whole year also referred to as the “no impact for one year”. Humans are the main causes of carbon emission. This is why Beavan goes through and introduce how certain chores or routine will be different from normal since such activity like grocery shopping and house chores will be limited. Beavan has a wife named Michelle, a one year old daughter, and a dog. I understand why my score is so low and I am working to improve on this. It makes me sad knowing how much I contributed into polluting the ecosystem. It is hard living in a city where society values conveniency. We tend to go for the quickest and easiest solution rather than thinking how it can impact us in the long run. When I have a home of my own, I would definitely opt for LED lights, solar panels, and better insulation. I try to recycle as much as I can now, however, it is hard when you have very limited sources to help give back to the environment. In respect to the foods I consume, I recently learned to compost my leftovers, thanks to a friend for informing me of how I can make a change to this world even just by doing the littlest things. As a human being, an average American can produce up to 1.6 tons of carbon. This number is ridiculously high since there are billions of Americans and the carbon emission can all add up. I really appreciated how Beavan and his family stood out to prove to everyone that anyone can help make a change. This changed my perspective on how I view the environment and how in the long run this can affect the future generations. In addition, this documentary showed how one can even grow a small vegetable garden even while living in the city. Having plants of any kind can help improve the air quality and decrease carbon in the air by the slightest bit. There were multiple issues that arose in the documentary such as the greenhouse gas production in the meat industry, the large amount of waste a household can produce, the minimal amount of space people have while living in the city, how badly consumerism affect the environment, and the amount of electricity a person uses. The meat industry is a big source of carbon emission and most meat consumers are unaware of this. If everyone could eat less meat, this can help contribute to decreasing the demand for meat, therefore decreasing the supply.
