Movie Analysis: The Butterfly Effect

"It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly's wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world." Chaos Theory. The Butterfly Effect, is a movie that illustrates the life of Evan Treborn, who in stressful situations has blackouts and has no memory of the event. Later he finds that by recalling the memories, reading his journals, he can actually go back in time and change some of the horrifying events that have happened. The movie is based on the butterfly effect, a phenomenon in which a small perturbation in the initial condition of a system results in large changes in later conditions. Such phenomena are common in complex dynamical systems and are studied in chaos theory. Changing your past can ultimately change everybody's present.
Kayleigh, Evan’s childhood friend, commits suicide in college when she is reminded of the abuse her dad had caused her when she and Evan were young. Evan goes back in time to stop Kayleigh’s dad from performing these scarring events. Evan loves Kayleigh and …show more content…
He time travels back to that time and tells Kayleigh some things that makes her no longer want to stay around. Kayleigh and Tommy then go to live with their mother where they have a better life. Lenny and Evan stay friends through college. The only reason Kayleigh stayed around was for Evan, and Tommy stayed for his little sister. When Evan removed himself from their lives, they were able to avoid the abuse from their father that caused so many problems. Lenny remains stable because none of the tragic events ever happened.
No matter how much we wish we could change events in our lives, I believe this movie shows the reason why we can’t. We never know the consequences that can come from decisions we haven’t made and we never know what decisions can change other people’s lives. All in all, if something happens against all odds, it is probably meant to happen. Just let it
