Memory is defined as ‘the ability to encode, process, and retrieve information’ (Narins, B. (Ed.). (2013). There are three major memory components; Working memory, Short term memory (STM) and Long term memory (LTM). Short term memory is ‘Memory for information that is available to consciousness for roughly 20 to 30 seconds; also called working memory’ (Lorelle, B. (2012). Working memory sores information for only a short amount of time and the main function is to solve problems and achieve goals as well as responding to environmental demands. (Lorelle, B. (2012). The working memory has three main components; the central executive, responsible for cognitive tasks such as mathematics and problem solving, The Phonological loop, dealing with spoken and written material and the visuospatial sketchpad, where information is stored and processed in a visual or spatial form. (McLeod, S. (2012). In relation to Susan’s case there is a possibility that she is experiencing difficulties with her Working memory. Susan became teary discussing the possibility of her husband moving out of the family home to live with a friend. This was likely to upset Susan because she was unable to process the information or come up with a rational way to solve the …show more content…
Long term memory (LTM) is defined as ‘Memory for facts, images, thoughts, feelings, skills and experiences that may last as long as a lifetime’ (Lorelle, B. (2012). Types of knowledge stored in LTM includes declarative and procedural memory. Susan’s procedural memory may have been affected due to Susan being quiet and withdrawn from nurses. Procedural memory refers to knowledge of procedures or skills which could imply that Susan does not remember how to appropriately interact socially with others. (Lorelle, B. (2012). Declarative memory refers to facts and events which occurred within an individual’s life, this type of memory has two other components; Semantic memory, which is general knowledge, and episodic memory, relating to specific events. (Lorelle, B. pg.259 (2012). It is not likely that Susan’s Declarative memory has been effected because she can still remember specific
