The Relief Society supported women who had physical and spiritual needs that attended the Church. Besides the Relief Society, Smith also established three burgeoning cities in the states of Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Before he could stand for trial, Smith was shot and killed on June 27, 1844, where he was being held prisoner, after an angry mob infiltrated the jailhouse (www.challies.com). Joseph Smith, along with his brother Hyrum, who was also killed in the commotion, were both buried secretly to avoid further attacks by the mob (http://www.mormonnewsroom.org). Throughout his life, Joseph Smith faced vast public persecution as his ideas seemed to be ridiculous and even blasphemous. We may never know if he fictionalized his religious visions, but we do know that Smith created a church organization upon those visions that helped create the doctrines the Church stands by which is still in effect today.
