Morality In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies

Law provides the necessity in which society is maintained, governed and protected – ensuring economies continue to prosper, and the values of justice and liberty are upheld. In the Lord of the Flies, the swift declination of stability and order, and thus the island’s descent into anarchy, showed me that the law is the most influential entity in our lives. Law also poses many questions, both philosophical and objective, and I wish to be able to explore these grey areas of morality in depth.
Of particular interest to me is the flexibility within the law, and how it evolves to the betterment of society. Recent occurrences around surveillance powers have brought into scrutiny the government’s true nature regarding monitoring data, and raise the question as to whether or not it is worth sacrificing our civil liberties in order to protect from potential terrorist attacks. What fascinated me were the specific implementations suggested by David Anderson QC, calling for a

Since then I have undertaken two work experience placements, firstly in year 10 where I spent a week shadowing a solicitor specialising in family mediation, in which a woman was receiving advice regarding her ex-husband recording her daily activities on CCTV. I took a more active role during my second placement - where I was at the national firm Ashfords solicitors, and I spent the week researching old land legislation which would determine the line of property that the client claimed to own, so that he could store vehicles in the specific area. Along with heightening my interest in the law, I believe I showed great initiative and efficiency in solving all problems that were given to me, as well as experiencing first-hand the diversity of the legal

Morality and Peace in Lord of the Flies Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a book about the life of school aged boys on an island after their plane crashed, and how they lived without adults to lead and guide them. Due to the new freedom, without adults and laws, the boys forget the simplest components of morality. Some even turn the most immoral deeds, killing other boys on the island, like in the death of Simon and Piggy. But there are displays of morality leading to peace throughout the book. One instance is when Jack doesn’t voice his anger in being rejected as leader.…

In the Roman Empire, England, France, and the Middle East, ever since people have been around, there has always been conflict and fighting. A common theme in war is inhumanity. If I was the creator of an ideal society in Lord of the Flies, I would choose to implement a totalitarian state, with a democratically elected dictator at the head. Before this dictator is elected, a constitution will be agreed upon by the members of the state, and the dictator must agree to follow these rules and regulations within the constitution when they are elected. A new dictator will be elected after 2 years, or when the previous dictator steps down. To enforce the rule of the dictator, a strict death penalty will be in place for treason, in addition to a group of “national police” to protect the dictator and enforce the rules. Any person found guilty of treason will be stoned to death, or will be pushed off of the mountain in the middle…

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, he makes the claim to the idea that humans have two desires; to live peacefully following moral standards and live for yourself and lose all boundaries of standards. He gives us characters, Ralph and Jack, in the novel that demonstrate these ideas of desires. He also displays, what might be the outcome when the environment that we are surrounded by, suddenly becomes a survival situation. Although I agree with Golding when he claims that humans do want to live peacefully and follow moral standards and live for yourself and lose all boundaries of standards, I do find that our environment is a factor that cannot be underestimated. When we are raised with certain standards of living, we can only be sure that they have become our standards after they have been challenged.…

When the teacher leaves the room in elementary school, the first thing that comes to the children's minds is to scream “Party!” throw things and stand on desks, but as soon as the teacher arrives back in the classroom they immediately sit down. This idea is demonstrated in William Golding's Lord of the Flies when their symbols of power and authority, the conch shell and their uniforms, are taken away by nature. With the loss of those symbols, their civility is lost as well. Through this, Golding is claiming that when authority is no longer present, humans can easily fall back into savagery. When humans are left on their own, everyday survival tasks become a way into savagery.…

Teachings of the past have always remained within humans. Tales from ages ago still make their way into the modern day, allusions to the past. The lessons that people are taught when they are young stick with them throughout their lives, setting the morals. William Golding came back to the of innate human behavior during the 20th century when wrote the novel Lord of the Flies, where he displayed his unique and nuanced view of innateness of good and evil. In 1923, a man by the name of Sigmund Freud forged the concept that the human psyche had multiple parts or layers, three to be exact. In the Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses psychological allegory to illustrate that people who are exposed to a society with no structure have their true human psyche comes out. This comes in these three forms: Id, Superego, and Ego. In Lord of the Flies, after the group of boys had been stranded on the island for a number of days, certain boys’ true personalities were revealed.…
