Phases of the Moon
In this report, I will be explain how and why the appearance of the Moon changes over time. With some knowledge about phases of the Moon, I was able to learn a lot of valuable information through observations, group discussions, collecting data, and recording my findings. My report will answer the question “How and why does the appearance of the Moon change over time?”
Methods of Collecting Data
Throughout my observations, I was required to collect my data, and there are several ways which I went about doing this. In order to understand why the appearance of the Moon changes over time, I first had to understand a little bit about the Moon itself. In order to do this, I would take pictures of the Moon, either …show more content…
I started paying more attention to where the Moon was located and how much of the Moon was showing that night, to get a better idea of how the Moon “moves across the sky” and appears to be changing shape. I made sure to record this as well. Another way I collected data was through group discussions. Inside the classroom, students would explain their observations of the Moon and discuss why they believe the Moon is in appears to be changing location every night. I also recorded some of this group discussion in my notebook, which helped me better understand the information from different points of view. Figure 1. Prediction of the Moon Cycle To get a better understanding of the Moon cycle, our group made our best prediction of the Moon’s phases (Figure 1) and then checked our prediction with some pictures online to make sure it was accurate. …show more content…
Starry Night helped enabled me to watch the Moon’s location change from day to day on nights where it was difficult or impossible to see it.
Reasoning 1: In class we did a demonstration using with the Moon, balls, pencils and a lamp. The Moon was attached to the pencil so we can hold it and the lamp acted as the Sun. Our bodies acted as Earth. As we rotated along with the Moon orbiting us, it became clear why only some parts of the Moon were visible some nights, which explains the Moon cycle. For example, at one point the lamp was only casting a light on half of the moon we were holding, thus creating a half Moon. When we changed the rotated our bodies to the side (Earth) and moved the moon around us, we could see the light on the Moon changing. By doing this, we were able to see the whole Moon cycle, from a crescent to a full Moon. This really showed how the appearance of the Moon relies on it’s relationship with the Moon and the Sun. By the Earth orbiting around the Sun, and the Moon orbiting around Earth, it is easy to understand why the Earth and the Sun affect the appearance of the Moon in the sky. When the Moon is in a certain location, the Sun my only hit part of it or even the entire thing. This really
