Montresor, a character from the Cask of Amontillado, is a clever person. He demonstrates intelligence and cunningness throughout the story. For instance, when Montresor is leading Fortunato to his wine cellar, Montresor uses his cunning skills to make himself in unseen amongst the crowd. He cleverly planned out the entire scene of his perfect murder, down to the details. "Putting on a mask of black silk, and drawing a Roquelaure closely about my person, I suffered him to hurry me to my palazzo.",(15). In other words, he put on a mask and cloak to make sure that no one would be able to see him lead a very drunk Fortunato to his house to murder him. He purposely chose carnival season to do his revenge due to the fact that everyone would be wearing …show more content…
This shows a high level of intelligence to go to such an extreme to make sure he would not be pledged guilty for the crime he was about to commit. Furthermore, another example of Montresor's intellect is when he makes sure that he has an alibi during the time the revenge takes place. "There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honor of the time. I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned.",(16). To rephrase it, Montresor deliberately told his servants to not leave his house, knowing that as soon as he left they would leave to attend the carnival. After all, who wouldn't miss such an enticing celebration? Montresor was wise enough to realize that reverse psychology would work to his benefit in this situation. He also knew that if his servants were ever to be questioned, they would say that they were working the entire time and that Montresor wasn't home, when in actuality, he was. Not only was he home, he was committing the perfect

The settings in the short story, “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, it makes it almost perfect for when Montresor seeks his revenge on Fortunato. One hint of why is, “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season… he accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much.” Since the carnival was going on, nobody would really notice that they were both gone and be too caught up in carnival activities. It also helps because Fortunato id drunk, so he would be able to follow Montresor where he wants to go. Another hint is when Montresor says, “The niter!…

Montresor’s revenge comes to sweep life from under Fortunato’s feet in the form of a brick wall. In what begins as a lively venture to find a Cask of Amontillado, a delicious wine, quickly changes to a purely evil plot. Montresor explains Fortunatos outfit the night his death takes place, “He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells (Poe, 165).” Ironically Montresor picked the night of the carnival and also knowingly Fortunato was going to dress as a jester, which will only further his humiliation. Easily convinced, Fortunato was mislead by Montresor down to the catacombs in beliefs that because of his vast knowledge of wine, that he will be able to taste the Amontillado to make sure it was authentic. “Fortunato abandons all reason and common sense in the pursuit of the Amontillado (Baraban).” but not only was Fortunato oblivious to the insults that has said that offended Montressor, but he ignorantly and drunkenly follows him into an obviously dangerous situation in desire of the…

During his recall of events he mentions a conversation between himself and Fortunato about his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” which translates into “No one provokes me with impunity”. (167). Montresor was raised with the belief that anyone who provokes him must be punished; therefore, Montresor is able to rationalize that his act of revenge is the only answer to the insults he received by Fortunato. Growing up in a family that preached and lived by its motto, it is reasonable to say that Montresor knows no other way of handling this situation. The family motto contributes to Montresor’s justification that retribution must…

Montresor is committing the atrocious act murder, and this alone differentiates him from any other protagonist, while, at the same time, giving a deeper insight on Montresor’s purpose. This is seen when Patrick White writes, “Montresor's act as something other than a demented or Satanic pursuit of revenge…I do not think so. He is neither demented nor Satanic. He has his reasons for what he does…Therein lies a deeper horror in the story.” (551).…
