Love, what is it? When one hears “love” they may think of the person whom they like, a relationship they know about, and/ or a physical attraction. Most do not think of the different types of affection, love of one's self, love for a child, love of appearance, and love of the mind. In the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, the reader can clearly identify fondness is important. Although she had experienced hardship and loss, the character Mercedes had experienced true affection from Fernand, Edmond, and Albert. It is clearly shown Mercedes has experienced actual love with real people. Mercedes is liked by various people, but one to be named is Fernand, due to her being to mother to his son. This is a strong example of a familial type of affection. The reader can detect this is true love since the connection between them is strong, due to them having a child. This can be examined in abundant ways, as in this outside source, “...[Fernand] is in love with Mercédès. When he learns that Mercédès is to marry Dantès, he mails the letter Danglars has written to the authorities accusing Dantès of being a Bonapartist conspirator” (Smith 58). The quote above shows that Fernand had true feelings for Mercedes, although it may not be the same love of when they first came together. Fondness is shown in numberless different forms, not only verbally, but also through actions. Affection can be shown by hugging, holding hands, or doing something to cause the other person feel appreciated. Love is all about doing things for the other person. One sees it every day in life, not limited to schools and workplaces , maybe one witness it through their own eyes and life not just
