Monkey's Paw Short Story

You see, the man that gave the monkey’s paw away to Mr.White was not the first man to have it. You may have heard that the story already, but you haven’t heard what had happened before it. You probably know by now that Sergeant Major Morris got the paw from the old fakir, but the fakir was not the one who chose death as his third wish, for that was the man he gave the paw to before Major Morris. So you know that means in this story, you’ll get to know the first man to receive the monkey’s paw.
India, 1867, A commoner was going about the city on a day when heat hung low over the city. He spots a fakir on the side of the road, selling quite unusual “items” you may call them. “Hey you there”, the commoner squeaks, for his voice is vanishing from using it all throughout his travels, “you’re selling items, this is true?” he asks in a curious tone.

“Why, I don’t think I should, I really am in a rush”, he answers, but the fakir interrupts. “I insist you at least purchase a drink, you look parched.” The fakir convinces the man, “Well, alright then,”the man answers in hesitation, “I’d like to ask you something sir,”the fakir exclaims, “ I saw you looking at my booth curiously over there,” the fakir directs his old, bony finger at the street the man was just on. “And I thought to myself, ‘this man surely needs luck from where he may be heading’, so I’m offering you a deal.” the fakir explains,”you see I have recently made a holy ‘amulet’ that can grant you three wishes, only three and will help you only if reasoned with.” the fakir says. “And it will only cost you the amount of a small cup of water.
”Hey, you said you were only offering me water,” the man said but the fakir cut him off again. “Listen to my offer young man, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I know you can’t resist.” the fakir
