Many teenagers look forward to being independent. Driving gives them that independence. In high schools today it is common for students of legal age to drive to and from school. Most young drivers are inexperienced and do not have the skill of other drivers. Teenagers are significantly more likely to crash in their first month of driving than they are after their first two years of solo driving, according to a new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (The Washington Post). New drivers should be forced to have signed on their cars identifying them as first-year drivers because there can be fewer accidents and other people and police officers will be more vigilant in monitoring young drivers.

Nonetheless, teenagers may take the learner’s permit exam and pass, but that does not qualify them to drive. Knowing about the rules and laws of the road is completely different from understanding them. An example of this case would be a teenager approaching a 3 way stop simultaneously as another vehicle. In this case, knowing to yield to the vehicle that arrives first would not be useful. The teen must also understand that the right-of-way rules (rules of respect) require that they yield to the vehicle on their right.…

With school and jobs on their minds they do not have the time to focus on the road while driving causing bad things to happen. This experience could not be gained in any other way. Although teens may drive at 15 with a guardian, there is nothing like driving alone that truly allows teens to learn. Furthermore, the fact that the amount of 18-year old drivers involved in fatal crashes has increased due to teens waiting until they are 18 to get their license shows that a lack of experience can be fatal. Dr. Masten says that in order to learn to drive one must expose themselves to crash risk to gain experience. He also suggested that teens that are going through these programs are not getting as much practical experience when they are accompanied by “co-drivers”.…

There are teens at the age of eighteen who have their license and can drive their friends around but lack experience. If kids are driving by themselves for an extra year, then they will be more responsible at the age of eighteen when they drive with others. With this inexperience, they have a crash rate higher than any other age group. If teens start earlier and drive more before they are free to drive their friends' places teens should lower the number of accidents they have on the road a substantial amount. Teens should be able to drive at a younger age because it can help them be more responsible.…
