Some people may be looking at my experiment and thinking that evaporation, evaporation rates, different amounts of sugars and chemicals, sunlight, and the fact that they grew mold wasn’t a very exciting experiment, but there is a lot more to all of it. There is a lot of things I was wondering throughout this experiment and I did some research to answer my own questions and that is what I am going to share with you right now. At the beginning of my experiment I didn’t think this was going to be a section in my paper but throughout the experiment I realized that my liquids grew mold so I had to include information about mold in my paper. Mold is a decomposer of dead organic material. Mold is also a eukaryotic micro-organism. I didn’t know much about mold before I did this research so I wondered what mold needed to grow. One thing mold definitely needs to grow is water. This surprised me because the one liquid that didn’t grow mold was water. Another thing mold needs to grow is oxygen. Oxygen is all around so I understood how mold grew from this. The other thing mold needs to grow is a temperature no lower than 40 degrees F and no higher than 100 degrees F. My house is not ever lower than or higher than these temperatures so this made sense. Another thing I was curious about was how mold spread. One way mold can spread is through spores. Spores can survive in almost any type of environment. Spores turn into mold when they are released and land in a place that has water, oxygen, and the proper temperatures. Spores are not necessarily something we can prevent because they are everywhere. The last thing I questioned about mold were the health effects it could cause. According to my research most people are not affected by low amounts of mold but for some people there are many health effects of exposure to mold. One thing that made me question something was the fact that it said mold was everywhere. If mold is everywhere isn’t it unsafe for people who suffer from exposure to mold. In my research it told me if people with asthma are exposed to mold it can cause them to have an asthma attack or it can just make their asthma worse. Some mold can sometimes cause infections in healthy people. People with AIDS, cancer, or organ transplants definitely shouldn’t be exposed to mold because it is very harmful to them.
