The captivating play A View From the Bridge, by Arthur Miller, portrays Eddie as the modern tragic hero who seeks to protect his niece Catherine. Eddie is a longshoreman who lives with his wife Beatrice and his seventeen-year old niece Catherine. Catherine the niece of Eddie and Beatrice is a beautiful and smart young lady. Who seeks approval from Eddie and struggles when he does not approve of Rodolpho, the man she intends to marry. Throughout the play Eddie believes that he is protecting Catherine, meanwhile he is ruled by personal love and guilt.

Beatrice's cousin and brother to Rodolpho, Marco talks about how he wants to stay for a few years and work so he can provide for his wife and children while living in America. Marco has three children four, five, and six years old. Marco states "What can I do? The older one is sick in his chest. My wife-she feeds from her own mouth. I tell you the truth, if I stay there they will never grow up. They eat the sunshine"(18). Beatrice's cousin and Marco's brother, Rodolpho has come to America to become a citizen and make a living in America. As Catherine and Rodolpho begin to spend a lot of time together Eddie becomes more and more uncomfortable. Beatrice tries to convince Eddie that Catherine is not a child anymore and if she chooses to marry Rodolpho than he should learn to respect her decision. As Eddie and Mike were talking about Marco, Mike states "That older one, boy, he's a regular bull. I seen him the other day liften' coffee bags over the Matson Line. They leave him alone he woulda load the whole ship by himself" (26). On the other hand, when Eddie and Mike were talking about Rodolpho, Mike said "I don't know... he was just humorous. You never can remember what he says, y'know? But it's the way he says it. I mean he gives you a look sometimes and you just start laughin'!" ( 26, 27). One night Rodolpho asked Catherine to dance, and Eddie was infuriated as he watched them dance. Eddies then asked Rodolpho if he could teach him how to box. Rodolpho agrees but is nervous. Eddie states "Sure, he's terrific! Look at him go! Rodolpho lands blow. 'At's it! Now, watch out, here I come, Danish! He feints with his left hand and lands with his right. It mildly staggers Rodolpho. Marco rises" (45). Marco angered asks Eddie if he can lift a heavy chair. Eddie tries to lift the chair but fails, when Marco attempted to lift the chair he raised the chair higher and higher. This matters because Marco proved to Eddie that he is stronger than him.
When Eddie enters the apartment he sees Catherine and Rodolpho coming out of the room as if they had sex. Eddie was extremely upset and told Rodolpho to get out, when Catherine says that she will leave too Eddie kisses her. In addition, Eddie kisses Rodolpho to prove that Rodolpho is a homosexual. When Eddie goes to visit Alfieri's office, Alfieri tells Eddie that there is nothing that he can do to stop Catherine from choosing who she chooses to marry.
