Modern Day Censorship Argumentative Analysis

Censorship is a part of our daily lives. Whether censorship is “just” or “unjust”, all humans meet censorship face to face in every passing hour of our lives. Although the suppression of knowledge is a common action that governments from around the world enforce upon their citizens, one must stop to ponder the question: Is censorship just? Censorship is rampant in times of tragedy, even more so during times of war. The intentions of using censorship is ultimately based on the providence of safety and well-being of a nation’s citizens. Although the intentions to use censorship and protect innocent lives is just in times of war, the truth is that modern day censorship is unjust as it leads to infringement of man’s rights. Some people say that censorship is a must, because it protects countless innocent lives. When crucial information is leaked about a military, one can only assume the possible damages that would have taken place. Cronkite advocates for censorship as he boldly states, “Either our own losses or the disposition of forces - that’s military information that simply cannot be shared with the enemy,” (Byrne 1). The common ground that both arguments stand on is the fact that censorship on its own is just during times of war. On the other hand, one argues that censorship is a must at saving lives, but the other solidly unveils the striping of constitutional rights from man. Whether people agree or disagree with censorship during war, it is evident that censorship must not void the rights of man in order save a few thousand lives. The corruption of censorship within countries can be shown through the voiding of constitutional rights.
