McKichan v. St. Louis Hockey Club, L.P was a 1998 personal injury case that made its way up to the Missouri Court of Appeals. The incident in question occurred on December 15, 1990 during a minor league hockey game between the Peoria Rivermen and the Milwaukee Admirals in Peoria, Illinois. The Peoria Rivermen is a subsidiary club of the defendant. The injury in question occurred during the third period of said hockey game when the plaintiff, who at the time was a goaltender for the Admirals, was knocked unconscious by a Rivemen skater who had body-checked him. While body checks are common in the game of hockey, the manner in which this particular body check occurred opened itself to question of whether it should be seen as something more criminal. The Rivermen player’s body check on McKichan occurred not only after the puck had flown into the stands, signaling a stoppage of play, but also after the referee had blown his whistle twice to gesture that play has stopped. After the incident the Rivemen skater, who had injured McKichan, was immediately ejected from the game and later suspended. To recover for his …show more content…
Louis Hockey Club L.P. listed as the defendant. I was perplexed why and how an entity, that wasn’t directly involved in the game, could be seen as liable for injuries that occur in the aforementioned game. I still had difficulties understanding this concept when I learned that the club of the player who caused the injury, the Peoria Rivermen, is a subsidiary of the defendant. I wondered why the Rivermen club itself wasn’t listed as the defendant. A month on, I now understand why the St. Louis Hockey Club L.P, was the defendant of the case. Since they were the entity that owned the injuring players club, who are just a subsidiary of a larger organization, they would have to be the entity that would be held responsible in the event of a negligent act by an employee representing their

The NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and the board of governors opened the formal expansion process, and began accepting applications in July, 2015. The NHL has been reviewing applications, and Lax Vegas has emerged as the top candidate for expansion, in part due to favorable resident income, and localized demographics. NHL interest is high for expansion in the city especially due to fact it is one the largest U.S. metropolitan areas without a professional sports team. If the NHL was able to break into this market theoretically they would capture all of it. The league’s checklist for identifying successful markets for NHL expansion include; a suitable area, strong ownership, and sufficient market demand.…

If you were to google pictures of “war zone” and then google again “riots” you would see a lot of similarities between the images: fire, destruction, debris, thick plumes of smoke. These images will give you a good idea as to what transpired and the eventual aftermath, in the evening of the Vancouver Hockey Riot. Some would argue a series of unfortunate events, such as inadequate planning, closing liquor stores early that day, and allowing overcrowding of downtown Vancouver. However what really happened was a handful of “proud” Canadians taking it upon themselves to destroy property, each other, and their city. Perhaps these youths were suffering from a psychological shift “after where a loss almost seems like an attack on your identity,…

Many court cases are beginning to arise due to former players realizing the NCAA unfair rules and guidelines, and it needs to be changed drastically. Two students on the Northwestern football team created a petition to be able to unionize and be compensated for their play, however, the National Labor Relation Board declined to give jurisdiction in the athletes’ case (Strauss) (this is another work from the same author). Although the board denied compensation for athletes, their reasoning was that college athletes are students first. They avoided the main point of the case which was William Goud, a former labor board chairman, thinks the student athletes have a good case by stating "The principle reason for that is their work -- they have…

When she walked in on a busy cafeteria, only a couple of employees were functioning in their roles while the rest were playing floor hockey with brooms and stale bagels in the back, including the supervisor on shift (Cohen & Fink, 2001).
