Mitosis and meiosis are forms of cell division that produce daughter cells containing genetic information from the parent cell. Mitosis is the division of the genetic material in the nucleus which is immediately followed by cytokinesis. On the other hand, meiosis occurs in sexually reproducing organisms and this type of cell division reduces the sets of chromosomes from two to one in gametes. Both mitosis and meiosis differ, however, both processes result in daughter cells forming. In the end of mitosis, two daughter cells appear shortly after and have identical DNA like the parent cell. However, in meiosis four daughter cells are produced and genetically distinct from one another and from the parent cell. Due to the fact mitosis produces new cells with identical DNA as the parent cell it can function in the renewal and repair in fully grown eukaryotic cells, replacing cells that died. …show more content…
Mitosis results in two identical daughter cells while meiosis results in four different daughter cells. Meiosis has two phases known as meiosis 1 and meiosis 2 resulting in four daughter cells. Both mitosis and meiosis are associated with cytokinesis. One major event that is similar in both mitosis and meiosis is the sequence of events in mitosis are the same in meiosis 1. Both processes go through the breakdown of the nuclear membrane, the separation of genetic material into two groups, the cell division of each, and the reformation of the nuclear membrane. However, both processes differ because mitosis goes through two phases of genetic separation and cellular division while mitosis only goes through one phase.
