The effects of missed care are associated with an increased risk of falls, adverse events and decreased patient satisfaction with care. One of the studies evaluated the role of missed nursing care in relation to staffing levels, which was measured as hours per patient day and patient falls. The study found that missed nursing care played a mediating role in the negative correlation between hours per patient day and patient falls. (Kalisch, Tschannen, & Lee, 2012). Another study examined the correlation between missed care and adverse events, based on patients’ feedback. The patients were surveyed with the usage of the MISSCARE tool. The study found that patients who reported adverse events such as developing skin breakdown, and pressure ulcers, new infections, infiltrated intravenous lines, medication errors, and other complications during the current hospitalization, were those who reported significantly more overall missed nursing care (Kalisch, Xie, & Dabney, 2014). A cross-sectional study of US hospitals found that missed nursing care is linked to patient satisfaction. For …show more content…
However, material resources were not found to be correlated with rates of missed care, which could be due to the study being conducted in a private hospital where material resources are usually available to meet the demand (Hernández-Cruz et al., 2017). Inadequate staffing is associated with higher rates of missed care. The study found that nurses worked in units with higher nurse staffing ratio reported significantly less missed care as compared to low staffed units (Cho, Kim, Yeon, You, and Lee, 2015). One more study reported that inadequate staffing as perceived by patients was associated with more missed care, adverse events, and lesser nurse communication with a patient, (Cho, Mark, Knafl, Chang, & Yoon,
