When we think of feminist today we think of Miley Cyrus or Emma Watson but Miss. Sophia was more on a conservative feminist. Sophia loved her family and respected them, but she was not willing to allow her family the power to dictate who she can marry. Generally the father of the daughter choose who she marries but Miss Sophia loved Harney and she knew that her father would never approve because Harney belonged the Shepherdson family. Miss Sophia took the matter into her own hands and ran off with Harney, “Well, den, Miss Sophia’s run off! ‘Deed she has. She run off in the night, some time, some time nobody don’t know jis’ when- run off to git married to dat young Harney Shepherdson, you know - last way so dey’ spec” (151).
MIss. Sophia is an astounding character in Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. She represents the gentleness of a mother, and the understanding to be a submissive wife, and the backbone to do what she believes in. Miss Sophia is a gentle sweet women, she loves her family and cares for all who is around her, she knows her place in her family, but she stands up and runs away with her lover.
