History of Art During my visit at Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, I came across several modern and contemporary artists. At the time of my visit the museum displayed different pieces created by women artists, they called this, “You Go Girl!” exhibit. While viewing these works I viewed different artists with different pieces but similar themes. Each artist used their art to convey issues or their feelings using different techniques.…
The book titled ‘Misconceptions: Truth, Lies, and the Unexpected on the Journey to Motherhood’ by Naomi Wolf is a book detailing the author’s perspectives and experiences of her pregnancy, birth, and motherhood period. It is a well researched book intersecting with personal accounts of experiences of pregnancy and birth while relating it to the birth culture in America. The book had three major parts which detailed the author’s pregnancy period, the birth period and the period after birth In part one of the book titled Pregnancy, she discusses about her discovery that she was pregnant and having ambivalent feelings about her pregnancy. She also shared her perspectives on the service rendered by her obstetrician as she felt a lack of compassion in the service provided.…
The documentary film Vessel focuses on pro-choice activist Dr. Rebecca Gompert’s work and her pro-active organization called ‘Women on Waves.’ Dr. Gompert takes her passion and work onto international waters where she and her team provide abortions at sea for women who have no legal option or alternative. These abortions can be provided safely, professionally, and legally as opposed to the unsafe options in countries where abortions are illegal. During her missions, she finds opposition with anti-abortion groups readily. The film details how Rebecca Gompert came up with a plan to provide abortions on a ship off the coasts of countries where the procedure is banned.…
The Necessity of Abortion In his essay, “What I Saw at the Abortion,” Dr. Richard Selzer writes about his experience witnessing an abortion for the first time. He does not writes from an objective viewpoint, and he tries to persuade people that abortion is an evil thing which people should feel guilty for doing it. Although he pretends to be fair in his essay, what he want is to desolate the reasons of abortion and transfer the emphasis to the little “needle” thing. For example: I know.…
American artist, Andy Warhol, once said, “they always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” Many see that one must take action before they get anywhere. Artist feel the need to express themselves in various ways in order to prove that rather than looking at the value of the work itself, society should focus on taking matters into their own hands for the betterment of the nation. Artist of the early 1900’s constructs themselves into society so that a change can happen. Their influences such as shaping society, expanding entertainment industries and putting an increase of unique styles of buildings, lead up to how people live today; and by taking a leap into the past, one can see the influence of artists on…
In the past, restrictions in artists’ potential may have occurred in fear of controversial topics. Based off of religion, drawings, paintings,…
Abortion is a steadily growing practice throughout the world. Approximately 50 million abortions are known worldwide each year and only about 1.6 million of those abortions happened in the United States alone (Albatrus). Women have had an abortion to save their careers, relationships, and appearances. In the poem, “The Friend,” Marge Piercy is showing how much men have an impact on women. The man in the poem tells the woman in the poem to chop off her hands.…
During the 1960’s the United States was in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. This movement sought to reconstruct the already established order of the natural existence. During this time of turmoil, for blacks, many took to streets to protest and joined lobbyist groups to help get legislation passed. Some took an artist approach. Many jazz artists used their talents to express their pain to their listening audiences.…
Although, the course has prompted the analysis of culture and identity through the expression of various artists. Many assignments prompt the student to not think about how they see the work, but rather what the artist intended and how the artist expressed their own identity and/or…
Art throughout the world reflects new ideas of the time and preserves the past historically marking each new era. A shift in the way the world is organized is almost always immediately followed by a new perspective that changes the way people create and receive art. Art has endless capability to be felt, observed, and examined in new ways that reveal a story behind each piece that weaves another picture of life during that century. Exploring art movements not only reveals the history of the time, but inspires new ideas that are constantly built upon and reflected in everyday life.…
Reproductive rights are the subject of extensive debate in capitol buildings and classrooms alike. In fact, just the other week, a friend and I got into a heated argument over the autonomy of a woman versus that of a fetus. My friend believes that a woman's right to make certain choices- namely abortion- end when fertilization occurs. Conversely, I'm very pro-choice for a variety of reasons. Firstly, I consider myself a feminist and as such value an individual's right to determine their own medical procedures in a higher regard than a fetus.…
Inside a busy city there lays a large portrait, housed within a museum of modern art. To the untrained eye, there is nothing particularly extraordinary about it, but experts claim it is worth millions. All the while, in the outskirts of the city, a gorgeous, sprawling mural covers the side of an abandoned building, catching the attention of everyone who catches sight of it, yet it is labeled as vandalism, as mere graffiti. What is the role of art in our modern society, and what is the true nature of human self-expression? Perhaps, in the realm of art, there are those who use it purely for self-expression, those who force it through inorganic processes and formulas, and those who exploit it for materialistic desires.…
This allows the readers to reflect on this question as the mother, the fetus, and the abortion process itself. In this way, readers can create their own answer instead of having the author’s opinion presented to them. However, whether or not this essay is intended to be pro-life or pro-choice, those who support abortion, will only ever be those who are…

Pop Art versus Abtract Expressionism The Pop Art movement can be considered as a rejection or critique on it’s predecessor Abstract Expressionism. It differs both conceptually, and in its subject matter; and just like most art movements, it borrows and expands on all previous movements, creating its own path and style. While the the one evoked emotion simply with color and very little subject matter, the other veered away from the personal feeling but rather commented on the societal consumerism beliefs, excesssivity and eliminating all uniqueness of the individual. Pop Art and Abstract expressionism are opposites in many ways, this essay will differentiate their characteristics and explore further as to how they grew to contrast eachother.…
