Purpose
The purpose of this report is to see the effects of the change in water temperature to a minnow fishes behavior and how long it lives.
Background
When the temperature of water increases, the amount of dissolved oxygen and other gases will decrease, making it harder for aquatic life to survive. This means, colder waters can hold more dissolved oxygen than warmer waters. But fish thrive in different temperatures. While some start to reproduce in the colder waters other start to in warmer waters. Warmer waters make the fish body “soft”, making them more susceptible to injuries and leads to more bacteria growth. Many bait fish can only thrive and live in much cooler temperatures, …show more content…
One bowl remained the same temperature (70ºF) while the other 4 bowls were manipulated. The second bowl contained water at 55ºF, the third bowl 45ºF, the fourth bowl at 65ºF, and the last bowl at 85ºF. Keeping these temperatures steady involved placing ice into the bowls 65ºF and lower and boiling or simmering water and adding it to the 85ºF bowl of water. After each day the temperature of each bowl of water was measured, kept steady and the behavior of the fish was recorded. The minnow fish were feed once each day and water changed every week but at the same temperatures. After 18 days the experiment was finished and two minnow fish …show more content…
It is clear that as temperature goes up, above 55ºF, the minnows life is shorter than those below 55ºF. Minnow fish cannot survive in water above 55F. The water becomes too hot for their bodies to maintain a state of homeostasis, not enough dissolved oxygen is in the water so oxygen leaves their bodies. They thrive in cold waters and live longer. In the temperatures 55ºF and below the fish were able to live to 18 days and more. It can be concluded that minnow fish cannot live in temperatures above 55ºF and if left in the right conditions and environment can survive for a long time.
Conclusion
A minnow fishes lifespan is dependent on water temperature as well as a lot of other factors as well. In the right conditions a minnow fish can live a thrive. This doesn’t narrow down to minnow fish though, it includes all aquatic life as well as life and our environment in general. The way we start to treat our environment doesn’t just affect that organism's life but ours as well. By conducting this experiment we can see the effects in a small aspect of temperatures in our world rising and now it affects life all around
