Mindfulness Moment Research Paper

Over the course of the semester I have really enjoyed partaking in the mindfulness moments. They have become that special time on Monday mornings- often the busiest day of the week- to calm the mind and prepare for the day. To be truthful, the mindfulness moment is probably one of the most enjoyable parts of the class. My favorite thing - although it could be a hassle- was participating in the Seminars. During today’s mindfulness moment, I kind of did a check in with myself. How am I feeling? What am I feeling? How is my body feeling? Am I feeling calm? Do I feel sore? Or hydrated enough? Today I realized I felt somewhat sore so instead of doing a plyometric workout I decided that I would do a yoga workout for an hour later on this evening.

But rather than detention or the principal's office, his teacher sent him here, to Robert W. Coleman Elementary School's meditation room. And at Coleman -- just blocks from where people took to the streets after the death of Freddie Gray last year -- more than 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Staffers employed with the Holistic Life Foundation, the nonprofit behind Coleman's Mindful Moment Room, say they occasionally work with students whose parents are incarcerated.…

I started off the day with a Sonic Savasana sound bath meditation with harmonic vibrations of quartz crystal singing bowls. This restorative practice was difficult, as I was in (or trying to be in) a meditative state for an hour, but it was truly rejuvenation to the mind, body, and spirit. My physical body was relaxed as it brought balance to the left and right hemispheres of the brain, cleared the energetic body, and left me with renewed clarity, focus, and spirit. Left in such a blissful state, I proceeded to partake in a much-needed Thai massage in a meditation hut on the grass. By mid-day, I headed to a workshop for yoga teachers on “Master Fixes" which work to make weak muscles strong and correct common dysfunctions in yoga postures for yoga students.…

Finucane and Mercer (2006) conducted a mixed method study to determine if mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) would be an appropriate and beneficial treatment for people who suffer from depression and anxiety. The authors utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods in their research. Thirteen study participants were recruited to take part in an eight week group program designed to address relapsing depression and anxiety through meditation and cognitive therapy (Finucane & Mercer, 2006, p. 4). " A body-scan, guided sitting meditation, mindfulness stretching, mindfulness walking, three minute breathing space, and everyday mindfulness" (Finucane & Mercer, 2006), were the treatment approaches utilized by the researchers.…

I attempted the Mindfulness Challenge on September 26th and to me, it was very easy. I do not think I overly use my phone, my main purpose for it is to contact my family and to play music. The best part about the experience was the weight it took off my shoulders. I am a very forgetful person, so for me to be able to have it somewhere and know that when I go back it will still be there was great. Another thing the challenge did, was to relieve some distraction, many times I will be attempting to do my homework and my phone will vibrate and the next thing I know it is three hours later and I had not accomplished anything.…

I am engaging in this form of contemplative practice because the subject of forgiveness is enormously complex because it depends on what type of area of forgiveness you are focusing on and in my case I am focusing on forgiving others when they offend and/or hurt my feelings. The way I plan to cultivate forgiveness is to practice mindfulness and meditation. I will do this three times a week for about nine minutes, to a guide meditation recording called “Mindfulness Meditation to help relieve Anxiety and Stress” by WiseMindbody. Through doing this I will inwardly pause and become very aware of where I am emotionally and physically. I will do this in a way that doesn’t cast valued judgement on my experience but try to understand the whole situation…

This paper will explain why I have chosen to review this particular book. I will explain how the book has made an impact on me and describe any changes I may decide to make as a result of reading this book. Specifically I will list two topics that were of particular interest to me, explain why, and provide examples of how my personal life or my practice may be affected. Book I chose the book 10 Minute Mindfullness: 71 Habits for Living in the Present Moment (written by Barrie Davenport and S.J. Scott) because of the title. Personally I identify with the idea that we usually are in such a hurry to get to the next thing on our list, that we fail to experience anything “in the moment”.…

People who are stressed may use drugs to cope, which can lead to addiction (Carlson & Larkin, 2009). Individuals who use drugs are often stressed because many stressors are associated with substance abuse (Carlson & Larkin, 2009). According to the Dalai Lama (2001), mindfulness can enhance presence in four ways. First, it can heighten the sustainability of focused attention. Second, mindfulness practice can enhance self-compassion which should lead to greater empathy and compassion with clients. The compassion and acceptance developed in mindfulness practice is viewed as ultimately valuable as the basis of compassion and acceptance toward others (Dalai Lama, 2001). Third, mindfulness can offer a way to reduce stress and enhance well-being and care for one’s own self.…

here is an old Zen adage that says “You should sit in mediation every day for twenty minutes, unless you 're too busy - then you should sit for an hour.” But what happens if we think we 're not cut out for mediation or that that we 're no good at it? I’m not actually surprised anymore when people tell me that they can’t meditate, or that they cant stop their thoughts long enough to meditate, or that they sat down for five minutes to meditate and it just didn 't work. I remember feeling the same way when I first started my meditation practice.…

Meditation/ mindfulness exercises are something I have wanted to incorporate into my life weekly. The first time I have even done a mindfulness exercise was in counseling with my therapist. I would do it once a week before every session. I found it really helpful to start out each session with a quick five-minute exercise. Without even knowing I went through four of the five stages in the transtheoretical model: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, and action.…
