Millay's Patriarchy

Improved Essays
In her poem: “"Oh, oh, you will be sorry", Edna St. Vincent Millay’s assumes a mocking tone toward the clearly patriarchal customs of society. In doing so, she is able to exemplify this common mindset through the actions of the woman throughout the scene. By placing this woman in this position, she is able to adopt a sarcastic voice, as she agrees to be the perfect wife, and to put on her show, despite her obvious disapproval. Through this scenario, and tone, it is possible to view how patriarchy is the driving force behind the poem.
The poem begins with an immediate example of a man patronizing a woman with the statement, “What a big book for such a little head!” Such a statement clearly invokes a sense of belittlement towards his wife. The

The narrator of the poem is a woman who is in love with the mysterious man. She refers to him as my love in line 23 of the poem, and mentions her heart has died a thousand little deaths in the wake of his shameless womanizing in line 8. She also clearly possesses the ability to control her behavior despite her emotional state. Throughout the poem there is a repetition of the phrase “Oh, I can” followed by behavior contradictory to her actual feelings. She states that she can smile, laugh, listen, and marvel at this man’s tales of bedroom conquests, yet it is clear his behavior does hurt her.…

English Essay (How do composers represent a sense of power and powerless?) Harwood’s Mother Who Gave Me Life, Sexton’s Little Girl, My String bean, My Lovely Woman and the novel The Penelopiad by Margaret Attwood all illustrate the restrictions and the resilience associated with feminine power. A woman’s true ability to create life is ultimately the greatest form of resilience inherited. However societal expectations of femininity prevent a woman to excel past the barriers of her patriarchal counterpart.…

In “The Author To Her Book,” Anne Bradstreet, an early American author, uses conceit throughout her poem as a metaphor to compare her book to a child. This comparison leads the reader to infer that authors tend to have a motherly relationship towards their works. Bradstreet argues that the care and protection displayed to the child by the mother figure, reflects how an author may behave towards their works. From Bradstreet’s experience of not receiving consent before her book being published, the poem deepens this relationship. Through behaving with motherly characteristics towards her book, Bradstreet expresses the importance of respecting an author’s work.…

It’s as though Millay spent the entire first eight stanzas telling the reader exactly what a woman ought to feel to meet society’s proprietary ideal, but is now rolling her eyes at it. Millay is able to understand that what she and the man had was purely sex; They were sexual objects to one another and she is not sorry about it: “And walk your memory 's halls, austere, supreme” (12). Here, she is outright saying that she exists as an ideal concept in his mind’s eye, that whatever feelings the man could claim to have for her are merely through the rose colored lenses of nostalgia. He is in love with the memory of her, he never truly new her.…

In today’s generation, the way a man treats a woman is a major factor. A man is expected to treat his lady as if she is the “only woman in the world”. Mistreatment towards a woman would make a man an outcast. The narrator in Charlotte Gilman’s, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, refers to her husband as being wise and loving. John is not wise and loving because he does not respect the narrator, he does not care about the narrator’s needs and wants, the narrator is afraid, and he underestimates the narrator’s illness.…

I will be studying gender development in children to gain a better understanding of how gender has influenced the development of patriarchal societies. I hope to learn what aspects of gender are biological and what parts are ingrained into children at a young age. Also, I hope to learn why adults continue to pressure strong gender expectations onto their children, even after acknowledging that it can be harmful for those who do not conform. Additionally, I want to explore why gender roles have have gone unquestioned for such a long time and why only now there is starting to be more flexibility.…

In the early 19th century, patriarchy was the social structure. Wives were considered a man’s possession rather than a partner. “Trifles,” a play written by Susan Glaspell in 1916, portrays this way of life well. The majority of the play has the women separated from the men. When the men are present, they make jokes about the ladies saying, “Well, women are used to worrying over trifles” and, “They wonder if she was going to quilt it or just knot it” (1005-1013).…

Gwen Hardwood’s poem “In the Park” exposes the darker side of motherhood and the role of women. It highlights the idea of changing identity through challenging concepts, beliefs and values generally held amongst mothers in today’s society. The theme of motherhood and change provide an insight into the life of a mother which demonstrate the burdens of her children. Similarly the poem, “Suburban Sonnet” emphasises the personal restrictions that associate motherly responsibilities along with the traditional role of a housewife. It is a representation of a patriarchal society for men to have authority over women, because of their supposedly inferior abilities.…

Modernism is a sweeping, wide range term covering a vast realm of works with the same values and beliefs during 1910 thru 1945. The time span of modernism was highly imprinted by a multitude of events, technology, and scientific advancements. It is best interpreted by the traditions it broke rather than a literal literary renaissance. Modernists were in search of truth behind the harsh and cruel existence they called reality. Responsible for part of these rebellious and dark mentalities were World War I, The Great Depression, and additionally The Dust Bowl.…
