Milky Way Vs Andromeda Galaxy

Improved Essays
Many spirals have a halo of stars and star clusters arrayed above and below the disk. Our Milky Way is a spiral, as is the rather close-by Andromeda Galaxy. Spirals are large rotating disks of stars and nebulae, surrounded by a shell of dark matter. Spiral galaxies like the Milky Way are observed as two basic types. A normal spiral, such as the nearby Andromeda galaxy, has a spherical bulge of stars at its center. The other type is the barred spiral, which has an elongated central bulge called a bar. Although a couple of dozen minor galaxies lie closer to our Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy is the closest major galaxy to ours. Excluding the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, which can’t be seen from the northern latitudes. The Andromeda galaxy,

My favorite constellation is Andromeda for many reasons. One reason is, the meaning of Andromeda, being "the chained woman". When some see this, they think a woman that has been chained, but it is much more than that. A some kind of hidden meaning. A woman, chained from something that they believe in, chained from a thing that they would like to do.…

Introduction Delphinus is a constellation that often passes by the watch of astronomers due to its limited size, however this little wonder has fascinating stars that captivate your attention when you take the time to focus upon it. Location South and away from the Milky Way's band lies the constellation Delphinus the Dolphin. This tiny grouping of stars lies in the transition zone from that of the summer star filled skies to that of the sparse autumn skies. Once you have located Delphinus in the night sky, turn your telescope towards Gamma (y) Delphinus' snout.…

It is believed that there are over 40 billion stars in the M33 and it is currently moving closer to the Andromeda (M31). It is believed that these two have tidally interacted in the past (“Triangulum Galaxy – Messier 33”). Some believe that there was a supermassive black hole in the center of M33 but it does not. The black hole is near the core of the…

Alternatively, it is thought that perhaps every galaxy goes through an active phase. Seyfert galaxies are divided into two classes in the following manor: 1) those that have certain emission lines much broader suggesting gas with high velocities and 2) those that have similar width narrow emission lines, indicating slower moving gas (Hewitt & Poyner 1999). Astronomers found that Seyfert 1 type galaxies sometimes dim and flare by 50% or more in only a month or so. The variations imply that the size of the object could be no larger than a light-month in diameter (Finkbeiner 1992). The popularity of radio astronomy in the 1950s unveiled yet more astronomical puzzles.…

The universe is always expanding and there are many things that can be discovered in the universe. Scientists always find new things in the universe and as always everything is very far away. One thing that close to our solar system, but still far away is the star Proxima Centauri. This star is the closest star but is 4.25 light years away from the sun. This means that the nearest thing is also the farthest thing.…

Young Earth Creationism is a theory that states that the universe, including Earth, is 6000-12000 years old and was created in six literal days (Mortenson, 2011). One of the main arguments for this theory is that there are many naturally occurring phenomena in the universe which show that YEC is the only viable theory. This argument was proposed by Dr. Russell Humphreys, an expert in YEC. One of these phenomena includes the spiral shape of the known galaxies. Humphreys suggests that the spiral shape of the galaxies are indicative of the age of the universe because the speed of the rotation of the stars in a galaxy is so high that if the universe was billions of years old then the galaxies wouldn’t maintain that shape (Humphreys, 2005).…
