The Milky Way
The galaxy is made of many diverse stars. From Protostars to Supergiant stars, it is also very unique. It consists of the only known planet that can sustain life (Earth ). As we know, the galaxy is full of stars. But did you know it is almost as old as the universe, or it was made of several galaxies that collided to create our galaxy? Here are some basic facts to improve your foundation of your understanding of our galaxy, the Milky Way. ( Below here is an image of the Milky Way).

This image (1) shows an embellished picture of the Milky Way. Who Discovered The Milky Way?
First studied by the ancient Greeks, they theorized the galaxy as a large group of stars that will dim out eventually.

However, he never realized the large fragments of gas and dust masked within the Milky Way to show its true shape. In the 1920s, another famous astronomer and a telescope named in honor of him, Edwin Powell Hubble provided irrevocable data about our galaxy. He concluded that the circling nebulae were indeed whole other galaxies. This helps modern day astronomers perceive the genuine essence and configuration of the Milky Way, and also the accurate volume and extent of the universe everywhere. Therefore, the discoverer of the Milky Way, is otherwise known as one of the most influential astronomers and physicist during the Renaissance, Galileo …show more content…
The Milky Way is extremely large in size. When measured it is about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 kilometers (100,000 light years). The Milky Way has a mass of about 100 billion solar masses, we can now say that it has about 100 billion stars. The sun is part of our solar system, which is a yellow dwarf star is said to collapse to a white dwarf in 7 billion years, according to scientists. The sun is also a main sequence star, also the nearest stars to us, he stars are Sirius and Alpha Centauri A. Although they vary in brightness and sizes, they all share one prevalent thing; they all modify hydrogen into helium in their crux. This releases large portions of energy.
Any stars in the main sequence are in the element hydrostatic equilibrium, gravity pulling them inwards, and all the light pressure pushing the star outwards. Just like any star in the universe, there are different stars near the heart of the Milky Way. However, the sun lays no where near the heart of the Milky Way, it lies within the of Orion Arm. It is nested between the Sagittarius and Perseus Arms in the Milky Way. How was the Milky Way

A spiral galaxy is a certain kind of galaxy originally described by Edwin Hubble in his 1936 work The Realm of the Nebulae and, as such, forms part of the Hubble sequence. Spiral galaxies consist of a flat, rotating disc containing stars, gas and dust, and a central concentration of stars known as the bulge.(Sloan) Spiral galaxies resemble spiraling pinwheels, nearly 77% of space consists of spiral galaxies. Though the stars and other visible material contained in such a galaxy lie mostly on a plane, the majority of mass in spiral galaxies exists in a roughly spherical halo of dark matter that extends beyond the visible component, as demonstrated by the universal rotation curve concept. In the Hubble classification scheme: Spiral galaxies…

Each of those galaxies contains billions of suns and countless worlds. But the whole part of the Virgo supercluster forms a small part of our universe. Copernicus had a proposal that the Earth was not in the center it was just one of the planets that revolve around the sun. The universe is unbounded and the cosmos must be infinite. Ten years after Bruno was killed Galileo looked in the telescope and realized that he was right the Milky Way was made of countless stars and worlds invisible to the naked eye.…

It is believed that these two have tidally interacted in the past (“Triangulum Galaxy – Messier 33”). Some believe that there was a supermassive black hole in the center of M33 but it does not. The black hole is near the core of the…

The Orion Nebula (Messier 42, M 42, or NGC 1976) is a “diffuse” nebula positioned in the Milky Way and it is located in the south of Orion’s Belt in the constellation of Orion. The first person to discover Orion Nebula is Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc in 1610. It is seen to the naked eye at night and it is the brightest nebulae. The distance between the Earth and Orion Nebula is 1,344 +or- 20 light years. It is 2000 times the mass of the sun and referred as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.…

While most of the radiation emitted from a "normal" galaxy is in the form of visible light, like that of the radiation of ordinary stars, AGNs are prominent across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Thus, astronomers needed to look beyond the visual regime to see their full potential. Recent technological advancements, such as satellite deployment, have enabled astronomers to explore energies once unattainable. In addition to the showing in a wide range of energies, AGNs also change in brightness on time scales from minutes to decades. It's no wonder then that some stars once thought to be variable, such as W Comae, AP Librae, and BL Lacertae, were in fact AGN.…

The closest galaxy to us is the Andromeda Galaxy, it is approximately 2.9 million light years away. As long as humans have been alive they have questioned and tried to explain the purpose of the visible pieces of the universe. Egyptians thought that the sun god, Ra, had to deal with the universe and how it “reincarnates”.…

Couldn’t we just study our Sun and the Milky Way, since we are literally sitting right in its system? Well, no. Light, along with other waves, travel in a set speed in a vacuum, a place with no pressure to affect the speed. And since space is a vacuum, these waves travel in a set speed, namely the speed of light: 3.0*108 meters per second. According to Michael Eastwood, a fifth year PhD student studying the Cosmic Dawn, “if you observe an object that is so far away that the light took one billion years to reach you, than you are observing the object as it was one billion years ago.”…
