Military Working Dogs
Blistering heat, stinging sand, gritty wind. These extreme conditions America's brave servicemen withstand while overseas. However, they are not alone. They are accompanied by Military Working Dogs who also encounter such hellish conditions. Why, one may ask, would a nation deploy dogs to war? A Military Working Dog is not the common, everyday street dog; he is tasked with completing, with ease, assignments that would potentially cause hardship and danger to soldiers. He is a valuable asset in combat because of his courage and loyalty to his handler and his job. Armenta recognizes this bond when he is discharged after stepping on an IED (improvised explosive device) and separated from Zenit when he says, "He was like my worn-out shield, every scratch tells a story. And nothing felt right without him...” (Paterniti 42). Armenta and Zenit's story is one of many that shows the iron bond that forms even under the imposing regulations of the military's edicts. The military also has regulations that ensure the recovery and care of injured or retired Military Working Dogs.This care is primarily provided by the Veterinary Division of the United States. The Veterinary Division consist of four U.S. Army Veterinary Corps officers with advanced training, one civilian veterinarian specializing in animal behavior, ten animal care specialists and three animal behavior technicians. However, in the event of emergency or a highly skilled specialist required, services worldwide are available for any Military Working Dog (341st Training Squadron). This inclusive group of professionals ensures that the hardworking heroes of war are well cared for during their deployment and retirement in order that they can enjoy the rewards of their service to this
